Hey guys, So after collecting a few performance parts for some upgrades I've come to the realisation that I really need a rebuilt engine with upgrades for it to reach its potential. So far I have HKS2530 turbos ARC SMICs (installed) AMS manis Z1 3 inch dumps 3 Inch exhaust (installed) Greddy Profec BII Socketed ECU (will add nistune) no injectors as yet but are obviously required I can't really justify the cost of a built engine just yet so my questions are; If I install the above listed but just keep the boost at 14psi or less would the stock unrebuilt engine cope with that? My understanding is that even an old stock engine can take this level of pressure when tuned for it and since the turbos feed off exhaust gasses the power level shouldnt effect the engine? and if so, would it be a laggy build considering the lower than potential power output? Probably not in the HKS2530s efficiency range. Obviously a 28R build would be less laggy but requires more boost for the same power so may be counterproductive in terms of needing an engine built. As far as I see it, these are my options 1 - screw the turbo upgrade, put in the boost controller and get it tuned, sell the rest. Obviously the cheapest. 2 - Install the lot now, limit the boost and upgrade the engine in a few years. 3 - Sell the HKS2530s for some 28R's, however I would lose money in this transaction as I got the HKSs for 2k. All maintenance has been done, so no need to suggest money better spent on that etc. Also this will be a street car. Sorry for the rambling. So what would you do? :zlove:
id fit the lot, get a really good tune, aim for 380 rwhp or there abouts, what ever the boost level is at that hp then just stick with it.
have you replaced cam belt and idlers then will be fine with old engine as long as all cylinders same compression
Cheers for quick responses guys, seems doable then, which is good Yes all this is pending a compression test, will get one done next service All belts etc are <10,000ks old. oh and commiserations zedboy, very unlucky
Yeah brand new, bought off the forum though in the (in)famous disappearing turbos firesale (no can of worms opening here, clearly those at UAS were mislead by HKS) and making a profit for just being first in and then onselling wouldn't sit well with me.
dude.. FIT THE LOT. there is no reason that with those mods you cant see over 300rwkw with (relative safety)..for a high tune. you will need larger injectors of course..and maybe a computer and a obvious tune in there.. BUT .. otherwise the engine should be ok if compression is good and your timing is set right and all other maintainance is done .
to be honest i dont think you can put over 300rwkw and relative safety in the same sentence as a stock un rebuilt engine. despite the fact that Benny has done it, lets put him as an exception to the rule. As for 100k service and plenum pull etc, those sort of maintenance items will have no effect really as to whether the motor holds together or not when its churning out the best part of 500hp. rings, pistons or head gasket will let go
This is your only option. Sooner you cook it sooner you get to rebuild it To be serious though, don't sell your turbos, you won't get a chance to buy another pair. Sell the dumps (HKS dumps are fine...) and put the money towards injectors. Nistune and run it on low boost/300rwkw you'll have heaps of fun...
well sort of ...... Install the lot & limit the boost for now....... in the mean time ...... get another engine and start the rebuild on it with all the goodies and upgrades you want. Then in a couple of years time when the current donk starts to die you have a fresh monster waiting in the wings. the beauty of this idea is that .... you still get a taste of what is to come the costs arent so noticable as its done bit by bit as the bucks are about you'll get ya $$$ back if you change your plans ... Kingy
Haha, yeah that has crossed my mind. Looks like I will continue down the installing path, I think I just needed some encouragement. Building an engine on the side sounds like the right way to go, pitty I'm not capable of doing it myself. So I''ll most likely just slowly aquire parts. Also on the HKS dumps, hear plenty of bad things about them on this forum, hence why I bought the Z1. This seems to vary depending on who you talk to though.
Small update, cold compression test showed 140,138,134,135,137,135 (yes I followed that other thread closely) so nice and consistant and a bit on the low side but I'll take it. Oil pressure test passed Burns no oil, runs cool, no leaks so will go ahead with this engine, leave any rebuild untill later. It's not like I plant it everywhere. Recently aquired 300deg rails with S2 connectors which I'll fit some 750cc JECS S2 style injectors to. Also plan to add a 3" uas xpipe and some high flow cats to complete the exhaust Probably also get a new fuel pump to be safe then chuck the whole lot in. Getting closer :br:
Nah, don't do that. You'll blow it up and kill 37 children, 400 puppies and destroy a nursing home. Much better off selling those turbos to me I'd be doing you a favour
