2.5 is perfectly fine, of course you'll lose a bit of backpressure. That's the whole idea of a free-flowing exhaust...

My understanding is that 2.5" will produce a bit more torque but will also resonate more which was the main reason why I stuck with 2.25"

Torque gains on my car after the catback were virtually negligible, so it will be for quite a lot of systems. Unless you eliminate/lessen all of the bottlenecks in a system you won't get the most out of it :p
Besides, it's still just an NA. They're not made for power, they're made for awesomeness in their own right ;)

    My silver NA sounded great.
    Parts:
Twin 2.5 inch stainless with mandrel bends
    TTZ headers
    UAS highflow 'race' cats
    UAS X-pipe resonator
Zetti Muffs. basically 2.25 (yes, smaller diameter) to twin 3inch outlets per side
...This was due to the backpressure thing, plus exhaust gas cools as it travels down the pipes, so volume is less... Never had a drama with it.

The system was real good, had heaps more high end torque (with my ass dyno), but lost out a bit on the low-end. Eg: I had a 70-80 speed zone on the way to work with a 5% grade. Used to take it in 5th, to get up to the limit (or beyond) but with the exhaust, I would drop to 4th, then step on the loud pedal. It would do it in 5th, but just not as responsive.

Here is my youtube channel video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enrJyLAWXMA

Check out my other vids as I disassembled the system and returned it to stock. Some mad vids without the mufflers, and straight out of the cats too.

Anyone that adds me as a youtube friend can see my private 'straight out of the extractors' video

Using mild steel instead of stainless will change its tone a hint deeper aswell if your after that. You should definatly get an xpipe muffler in there.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I got a quote today for a 2.5" exhaust, full Magnaflow set up for 1.8K.
    This included:
    - 2.5" Piping all the way through
    - 2x High Flow Magnaflow Cat's
    - Magnaflow X Pipe
    - 2x Magnaflow Mufflers + Tips
    - All labor included

Is this a good price? Any suggestions as to a good exhaust shop around Melbourne if this price is unreasonable.

That sounds about right if they're supplying everything, depending on the muffs your looking at LEAST 500 for the pair, factor in cats and x pipe and you've got almost a grand in parts alone excluding labour and fitting... seems round about right... not that it would make a HUGE difference on an NA but will it be mandrel or press bent?

Whats the difference between mandrel or press bent?
I'll call the bloke up tomorrow and see what he says. He's a great bloke to deal with, I took my Zed to him today and he put it up on the hoist and had a quick look at the state of my stock system, gave me heaps of info on whatever I asked him, and he didn't charge me a cent!

i call BS especially if parts are gen magnaflow.. it comes to just under a grand for the parts using group buy prices which i doubt any shop out to make money would charge... Unless you are supplying parts or not getting charged for pipes and labour it don't add up, unless its stolen or you know the guy lol...

Mandrel bends mean the pipes have less restriction at the bends, press bent will squash it a bit and add restriction, i doubt you'd notice the diff on an relatively stock NA tho...

Make sure you ask, otherwise they might do the work and your stung with a 2k bill that you weren't expecting.

I paid about that for mine, supplied the mufflers and cats myself though from the magnaflow group buy. 2.25" mandrel bent mild steel.

And this is how sexy it sounds ;)
