As the forum resident paranoid security freak ((I currently have seven points of immobilisation), I got to thinking about additional security for our zeds.

With the Mr Zee incident this has just spurred me to do something about it. Let's face it, a good thief can break into and start a zed in less than sixty seconds.

    I've devised a circuit that :

    • can be installed with just 5 wires to connect (six if also opting for flashing LED
    • is self or passive arming (that is, as soon as you remove the key, it's activated-no need to remember to turn it off).
    • utilises standard components available at any Dick Smith/Jaycar
    • Cannot be bypassed by bridging relays, jump starting or the usual hotwiring tricks
    • Can be located in such a position in the car as to be very frustrating and almost unfeasible for the typical car thief/joyrider to find
    • Has no remotes or batteries etc
    • Will probably come in under a hundred bucks installed (QLD) or about $25 DIY if you're handy with a soldering iron
    • Will take approx 3 hours to install for the average competent zedder

I'd like to get an idea of interest so please vote in the attatched poll or reply to this thread.

Including a anti car hijacking feature would also be nice.

Perhaps a switch that sets off a 2 min timer which subsequently activates the immobiliser (fuel pump cutoff).

The switch, or trigger signal, can come from the seatbelt latch and or drivers door.

So if the door is opened while the car is running the timer will be triggered and after 2 min the fuel pump is cutoff.

    yep, interested

providing it doesnt interfere with the current alarm system..

WOW, I thought this might be a popular thing ---->

Here's why I'm doing this; (get a coffee, I'm on a roll here;))

'Kill Switches' are fine if you remember to turn them on.

They invariably are a switch somewhere that isolates either ignition, fuel or starter. Their main weakness is their design, that is you have to remember to turn them on and they are an extremely simple circuit which can be bypassed just by dropping the steering column shroud and rejoining the cut wire. If you've ever seen a 'no frills' alarm installation done you'll see just how easy it is to bypass one.

Multiple point immobilisers are better but most thieves (if they know what type/brand it is) buy one themselves and practice in their own time how to overcome it.

This is where a hybrid like mine comes in. Unless you've studied the zed's wiring circuits and know where each ignition, fuel and starter component in the car is, you've got buckleys chance of bypassing it.

Even then, as I won't install it in the 'usual' places a thief is going to have to pull most of the car apart to locate it and that equals time which is the thieves enemy.

I'm NOT saying it's impossible to bypass, but rather that it's going to be bloody hard and time consuming for them so unless they really want your zed and arrive with a tow truck- it should deter them enough to move onto the next car.

    SO, to answer the questions:

    * Yes it will work fine with any other security device, in fact having two flashing LED's will really deter thieves.

    * There is a decoy switch included in the kit but the real trigger device is another design which I won't go into here for obvious reasons but suffice to say that the owner can have their choice of around five different trigger options just to further confuse the thief.

    * Anti-hijacking is an idea we could integrate later I guess but to be honest, I'd rather have a sat tracking device if anti-hijacking is your concern, also most commercial alarms have an option of locking the doors on ignition in any case.

    * There will be all black wiring both inside and out of the unit and even if the thief finds and opens the unit they will just see a spagetti mass of about 30 black wires and multiple relays (or a PCB board depending on design)

    * There's also a sequence of events you have to do to start the car or it won't start.

OK, I'll get started and come back to everyone with firmer details on pricing/availability etc.

    I'll offer people three options:

1: Component list to DIY build and install
2: Pre-built units with DIY install instructions
(Might do a special tech day for those who want to
install themselves but want some supervision)
3: Complete supply and fit (Qld only at this stage)

oh im definatly in, this WILL work in cojunction along side

my exsisting alarm/immob? like once i take my key out i will be able to arm my alarm aswell right?
and i remember a topic involving something with a keypad? will this have a keypad? would be cool and kinda star trek styles..

will this be compatible with turbo timers?

yes i have an inbuilt turbo timer function into my alarm

when i turn off the ignition with hand brake up leaves my engine running, will ths affect it?

Keypad would be a bit of a wank IMO, anyway's it is an obvious

giveaway that there is a security device installed, just follow the wires to the main box!!!

    SO not at this stage.

The ZID immobilises once the ignition has been turned

    off.

A TTimer temorarily links the ign wiring to 12V constant for the set period, once timed out, it cuts power to the ignition so yes the ZID should work in conjunction with ttimers and ttimer alarms etc (in theory)
