Going through the various 300zx builds on here and o other websites, I have seen some pretty cool engine swaps.

    2JZGTE / 1JZGTE
    RB25DET / RB26DET
    LS1 / LS2 / LS3
    Vq35 / 37
    SR20DET

There was even one guy who said he had a CA18DET swap.

So I was wondering, have you guys heard of any other swaps?

What do you guys reckon is the best swap?

vh45 has also been done. as has 350chev.

i geuss the short answer is, any motor can be made to fit any car, just depends how much you want to spend, and wether your trying to keep it road legal or just a track car

ive never seen a rotary powered z32..........maybe theres a good reason for that though. ;)

I don't know Ross. A 20b pp would sound off the hook and go crazy in a z32 have to be smaller and lighter as well

Just consider the engine swaps that were completed efficiently and documented with lots of photos and written explanation.

The vh45 engine transplants don't seem to be as successful from what I have read.

The front cross member of the Zed would favour engines with rear sump.

Have you been following Ztoy v8 sleeper project?

I did a vh45 swap. Other than the noise there's not much point over a tt. In the states they are $300 motors so make sense as a low cost option compared to rebuilding or swapping to a tt. I pulled mine out to put in a modded tt...

If I had my time again and was going to do another swap it would be a lsx or preferably a 20B. I'm a huge fan of rotaries.

Please do a 20b, I don't think I'll ever be able to make the commitment but I really want a triple rotor Z to exist.

    Any of the V8 options

imho there's no point in most of the other options in that list. Especially the VQ's or the 4 bangers.

CA18 is laughable. The Z is heavier than a Silvia so you wont even get Silvia level performance from that or the SR20. Was the guy you spoke to confusing your car with a 180sx? ;) :zlove:

    What are the overall gains?

I'd say the LS series simply because then you have a Zed that ANY muppet can work on, and parts are all over the place in Australia. And the gains are obvious.

EDIT: JUst double checked my facts on curb weight. Silvia (S13) is about 300kg's lighter. So I GUESS if you saved that same weight during the swap?

And going from an NA VG to a CA18DET....... I still think the performance gains would be negligible and that's a lot of hassle for no/little effect.

At BEST you may have a car that would pull high 14's equal to a 180sx with a CA, but I doubt it.

You'll of course totally upset the balance and be swapping heads ever other month ;) BUt you'd have an engine bay that's easy to work on at least.

Keeping in mind that even the SR boys "upgrade" to RB motors, I can't see any reason to dump a CA or SR into a Z32.

Personally I'd just buy an S15

    I'll stop now.

I'm a bit of a purist so prefer to leave the VG where it belongs.
Nothing wrong with it, makes plenty of power, sounds great, reliable (when maintained) honestly can't think of a good reason to swap it out other than being different.
My favourite motor is a 2jz but wouldn't put it in a Z32 as it doesn't sound as good and it's a bit of stuffing around to get it into the zed engine bay which was never designed for a straight 6.
Not a big fan of V8's so I don't consider them as options.

    2JZGTE / 1JZGTE - yeh
    RB25DET / RB26DET - downgrade
    LS1 / LS2 / LS3 - yeh but turbo ;)
    Vq35 / 37 - nah
    SR20DET - downgrade
    ca- downgrade

the 2jz is a way better sounding engine than a vg ......

If you were racing in a category where power was restricted or control tyres were terrible an SR could be viable, save a bunch of kilos over the front wheels. It only takes ~5psi extra to make the same power from an SR as a VG and if you're going all out the silly cam/rocker setup lets the SR rev higher.

That doesn't explain why you'd put an SR in a heavier chassis though, maybe if you aren't allowed widebody mods?

theres way more to it tha just an extra 5psi to make the same power.

torque, power spread, torque pread, spool time. durability.

You need to spend more time on a Silvia Forum

"Just add boost" is their motto

I never did. Still warped the head
