Engine miss and airleak

I have a problem with a miss in the engine which seemed to be shorting out at idle then stalling.
I will give a rundown to date.
replaced all coilpack connectors and swapped out a few packs... with no difference.
Its been at a local mechanics for a few days and he's been checking things between jobs.

He found that by blocking off the fuel pump return pipe that the increase in fuel to air mix seemed to make it run smoother.

The fuel pressure seemed to be up to scratch according to his tests.

The pressure test of the induction system reveals a possible leak (hiss) at the rear of the engine but it can't be isolated .. OR it may be under the plenum?? (is this possible.)

The injectors were serviced 18 months ago during a plenum renovation by Rollin so its unlikely but possible they may have deteriorated as I have only put 600k on it in 18 months..?

Does anyone have any clues regarding the cause or possible causes to the problem?

Why would it seem to be shorting (click click ) as the revs drop just prior to when it stalls.

    Thanks

    Steve

Fuel pump controller might be cactus. Not working properly at low speed.
