I had an emissions test done today on the silver TT I bought from Heavytrev some (many) months ago. As the car had never been registered in Oz, 'only' had a Qld compliance, i had to do it all again in NSW. rego requires a blue slip. Blue slip requires an engineers cert. Engineers cert requires an emissions test. Emissions test has a 6 week waiting list ...

Car has only done 100k and engine is in pretty good nick. (as is rest of the car) I was planning to just clean it up and fix the slightly crushed front end, bur when I suddenly had 6 weeks for the emissions test, I decided to do a boost leak test, and found leaks galore. Maybe that's where the popping sounds from the exhaust originated from.

Time for a plenum pull. It makes you wonder how the Nissan engine designers brains work when you pull one of these apart, but with a lot of patience, plenty of stickers and no hurry the plenum eventually came off. Clean everything up, replace all the black vacuum hoses with blue ones, and try to figure out where all those fancy hoses I got from caz actually go. The most tricky ones were the ones that were attached to a pipe that was lying in the boot and therefore impossible to find (on the engine)

After bypassing the under plenum hoses and putting it together the boost test only showed one hose missing, and after fixing that it started up and ran like a dog for the first 5 minutes. Then after pushing down no 4 injector connector it started running like a dream.

After talking to the engineer, I had to put the stock air box back on, and got new filters from Nissan (he used to run emissions tests, and his tips are - 1. change the oil. 2. change the air filters. 3. get a tune. 4. Get a new carbon canister. No 1 had been done, did no 2, 3 - plenum pull and checked everything on datascan, 4 too hard.

In Sydney, there are only 2 sites that do emissions testing - Botany (Mascot ?) and Penrith. I figured driving 90 k on the motorway was preferable to fighting my way through the city, so that was my choice.

You are allowed to drive unregistered cars to/from RTA inspections, but I chickened out this morning and ran up my favorite panel beater and borrowed his trade plates.

It was very close I never made it though. Yesterday I was doing laps of the block and the car suddenly spluttered. came good again, but stopped altogether 20m down the road from home. Started again OK and datascan showed code 11 - CAS. Reseated the CAS connector and did another 5 laps - all OK.

This morning I stopped at the servo to fill it up. 200m down the road - cough and splutter. Hmmm, stop, wait for a bit, turn around, get to the roundabout, bugger it, turn around again and head for Penrith. Ran like a dream all the way. Possibly a bit of water in the fuel after the tank being left empty for at least 2 years.

Made it to the emission station with 45 minutes to spare. No problems, I'll just finish the Lotus seven thingo and you're on.

The car is put on a dyno, and the RTA officer drives the car according to a schedule. A curve showing the speed is shown, and he has to drive the car to fit the red spot on the green curve. Take off, accelerate, slow down, accelerate, stop. Take off, slow down, go fast, slow down, accelerate etc.

The results turned out to be very good. Way below the limits. The second run quite a bit better than the first one, where the car had sat for 15 minutes.

A big surprise at the end - it was free

Now for the engineer to come and have a look

Micheal at Penrith is a nice guy. Very helpful with questions and the like.

I would love to know if a car with EGR, AIV, and PRVR removed would pass emissions of tuned properly.

thats the beauty of the V shaped engine... they are emissions friendly compared 2 a straight 6 :D:D:D:D. the guys in the US dont seem 2 have a problem getting there emission passes

Yes, so would I. Are we able to get this checked somehow? Also, what about removal of the carbon cannister...?
