electrical fault maybe?

    Hi Forum,
not sure if it is an indication of something or not, but what happens is when I am putting up the windows at idle, the revs drop right down to just above stall and if the lights are on they dim almost all the way out.

noticed last night that my dash lights were flickering almost in time with the revs.

can someone quickly say if this is a normal thing or maybe an indication that i'm not holding charge or the battery might be under powered? I'm running a 550ish battery, so it should be enough to handle everything.

    Your alternator is ****ed.

    I'd suggest the following

    1. Check the plug on your FICD. The FICD is increases engine speed to cope with increased load. I wouldn't expect it to be active under the conditions you have described but you may as well check anyway.

    2. Put a multi meter across your battery terminals with the high beams and fan on. Check voltage at idle and at 2500rpm and report back.

As an extra note the size of your battery is irrelevant once the motor is running, should be completely reliant on the alternator (The battery does act as a ballast resistor so don't unhook it while running). A larger battery just means its a little longer before you notice your alternator is fried.

None of the wiring in the door is large enough to draw a current the would effect the engine's idles, it would melt well before that (or hopefully blow a fuse).

No maybe's about it, a definite electrical fault.

I wouldn't think so, but it's 10 seconds to look and the issue relates to charging current under load. I don't expect he'll find the problem there, just thought it was worth the time to visually confirm.

    Cheers for the feedback.
Ive been down lorne all day but will check the current and report back..

I bet changing the alt would be a real pita -_-

Yeah, I more meant that loose wiring in the door wouldn't cause an otherwise fine car to lose spark or anything, big audio amps can but I doubt the problem is in the door.
I'm not familiar with how the alternator voltage regs work so not sure whether the AAC or FICD would be involved.
