is it possible that a tuned ecu might be set up to work based on mechanical timing being 10btdc?

    Yes.

If it has than I would love to know the reason behind it. I can't think of a logical explanation to do that for a 'tuned' ECU.

I know a lot of tuners will set the CAS to max advance or retard and then offset the timing in the ECU to compensate, its done to make it easier to set base timing....don't have to use a timing light. However setting it to 10 degree's i wouldn't have a clue, unless its a mines ecu and the timing was retarded to stop it pinging!

    as i thought.

thought I'd ask because my timing was originally set on 10btdc before i set it to 15 after i noticed. doubt that the fake tomei ecu I was running would have been setup for 10btdc mechanical timing though since it runs better at 15btdc.

I notice you said it runs better, not safer...

    slightly better.

I've been back with the stock ecu for the past week.

I think the tomei will be wiped soon, unless someone really wants a fake tomei ecu to play with, I might send it to toshi to get rechipped. I've run the tomei as a daily for the past year. nothing weird happened like my factory tt cup holders catching fire...

just an update on my Z if anyone cares:

I bought a new half inch socket set today hoping to get the spark plugs out and do a proper comp test. but the extender was about 3" too short so it will have to wait.

last time I did the comp test, the engine was fresh from sitting around for god knows how long. it hadn't been run properly. it wasn't running properly at all anyway.
I only had 1 plug out at a time
the engine wasn't warmed up at all
thottle bodies weren't all open like i read is how to do it properly.

so the figures I were getting of about 120 per cylinder might actually be under what I actually have.

I want to do it again, and then suss out whether its a ring or a valve issue.

if its a valve issue I have a new set of valves sitting here.
if its a ring issue I have a new set of pistons sitting here, so eventually it will go in and get a proper rebuild.

the only thing i've noticed other than low comp is some oil sitting in the plenum, but by all accounts that doesnt seem to be an uncommon thing, although my pcv valves should be only a year old.
