ECU Reflash

Hi all, I fixed my hesitation issues by replacing my TPS but now thanks to the increased responsiveness its uncovered a hidden miss when its cold, and a slightly smaller one when warm, its running super duper rich, new platinum plugs are already fouled after 2 weeks in the engine! That and you can smell it. Now it could be a number of things I guess but I'm guessing a shitty tune is the culprit, also gonna check the throttle body adjustment and I have disconnected the battery to drain the ECU to see if it'll "re-learn" that the TPS is working properly :p Any other tips would be great :)

I pulled the passenger side panel out to see what I had living under there and its a type 23, 2371041P14, A18-000 MC9. It has a big sticker on it saying "Quality Products - Escort - Power Parts & Engine" I'm assuming its been chipped and flashed from a stock ECU. But whatever the tune on there its way too rich for how the car runs now.

Question is does anyone know where I could get a chip and reflash in the perth area? Or does anyone know of a good ECU replacement for a decent price? Is a reflash something a regular joe can do? I.e. backup the current tune and flash something different?

    You have a few options.

Open the ecu, desolder the bios chip and put a new one in with a better tune

    or

Socket that bios and install a nistune board, then go get a proper dyno tune.
    Not cheap...

3rd option find one of the guys parting out a Z that matches yours and buy a stock ecu, be aware that if you are running high boost the tune may be for that, especially if you are running extra fuel pressure - aftermarket fuel reg.

    Running 1 bar.
I guess I'll just need to fork out for some kind of programable one and get it dyno tuned.

Also now I think about it the issues when the TPS was stuffed may have fouled the plugs as it was reading full throttle when closed.
Might clean the plugs and see if they foul again.

These bloody Z's sure keep you busy.

Prior to retuning the ECU, it would be a better idea to "read" what tune you already have.
Secondly, the ECU adjusts the fuel supply based on signals from various sensors, for example the O2 sensors.
The O2 sensors signal varies depending on the amount of O2 in the exhaust.
If for example, there is unmetered air entering the system, it can have an effect on the O2 sensors output.
There are numerous checks & tests to be completed before thinking the ECU is the problem.

Yeah you're right. I should bust out the multimeter on all those pesky sensors.
I think my next step is cleaning the plugs at the very least.

Thanks all for you advise, I'm probably jumping to the wrong conclusion with the ecu.
