We all know the dangers of driving while on a mobile phone and that it is illegal, well at least I though everyone did. While walking through the city today on my way to lunch I happened upon a pedestrian crossing. Waiting for the opportunity to cross I took particular notice of a Police car turning across the lights in front of me. The driver was on his mobile phone for the entire time he was turning the corner. I wanted to get his number but he was out of sight before I had a chance.
I thought it was a fantastic example to set for the public.

they are only allowed to do it if its an emergency use otherwise they shoul

d not be doing it. Put a complaint in at the station. Least that way the boss might give him a hard time.

    what makes it dangerous ?

    is it the distraction ?

no, because you are allowed to use a hands-free kit, or talk to a passenger.

so it must be that you only have one hand free to drive with ?

can't be that, I have a friend with only one arm and he is allowed to drive.

is it a combination of the two ?

I don't think there's a law against a person with one arm talking to someone while they drive ?

    I'm all confused

either that or once they get your details they'll give u a hard time

now if we all watched the ever insightful a current affair the other week they pointed out that there are so many more things we all do while driving that we could be booked for ie using the stereo, taking a drink or even smoking ( but anyone who smokes in a z should be booked) i think it came under under care and attention. The main problem is it seems if you don't know the laws you can get booked for whatever but then if you ever do learn them to protect yourself you get in trouble for being a smartass by them.

there is one thing you need to understand

that distractions are dangerous and that is the main cause of accidents.

While using a handsfree and talking to your passenger isnt illegal, it doesnt mean it isn't dangerous. As a matter a fact they are trying to make even handsfree illegal.

I have missed my turn off point before because I was busy chatting with my passenger. And it was not because I was using the mobile or driving with one hand or anything. It is the distraction. While my example is a minor incident. I mean missing a turn will only mean I have to travel further to turn back or use another route, but it is a good example of being distracted.

Doing small talk is one thing but when you are engrossed in deep conversation (something that requires some thinking re business deals...etc), it will become a distraction as you will be multitasking. And to be a safe driver, you really need to have 100% on the road and surroundings.

So there isnt much to be confused about. What isnt illegal isnt necessarily safe practice. However what is illegal is likely to be proven dangerous already.

Anyway, simple rule: DRIVE SAFE EVERYONE!
