So i took my turbo off my head today, turns out it has eaten a bolt. And destroyed the fins. I was shocked but considering my luck, its to be expected.

    The other side is pristine.

I will post some pics when my camera charges.

Will my engine be OK, swallowing all that shaved metal. It seemed to be only a small bolt, actually it could have even been a washer. I have no idea.

That would explain my power loss after a few hundred k's.

How in the hell did a bolt just come lose from somewhere and get sucked right into the Turbo?!

It must have fell in the piping while it was sitting in my garage to over a year. Although most of the pipes were covered.

    Oh my gosh

That settles it then. I haven't started mine for 2years and am just about to do the same after an engine out/in affair. I am taking all the pipes off and putting them up to the compressor and blowing them out again. They were covered but can't afford that to happen :( Sorry to hear about your bad luck tho

Many serious race engine tuners and builders have a small borescope to look into the cylinders looking for damage.
If you can hunt one of these guys out and ask them to have a look for you to see how peppered the head/piston surfaces are.

Otherwise youll have to pull the affected head yourself to see.

If damage is insignificant then your laughing minus a replacement turbo.
    Otherwise...well that sucks for you!

    Good luck M8

    yeah

It's a good idea to check them before fitting. Blowing them out with a compressor is not 100% safe either because if the bolt is long enough to lodge in the pipe the compressor might not move it. What I did was made a wad of rag and attached it to wire, then pulled it through each pipe. Once the pipes were clean I taped the ends so that nothing could drop in while assembling and the tape was the last thing to come off each pipe before putting the hoses on.
I've been caught like this before;).

Im ripping the heads off anyway, they would be off but all my long sockets are 6 sided. and these dont work on arp bolts.

I cant imagine it being to bad, worst case i use my other block.

Open piping and bolts/nuts are just

an accident waiting to happen. I recall a plenum pull a couple of years ago where I'd just removed a spring clip off an under plenum water hose standing at least two feet away from the zed.

The clip sprang away from the pliers, travelled some 4-5 feet landing square into the drivers turbo outlet. It was hidden behind the curve and only after extensive engine bay searching we came to the conclusion it must have been there as it was the only uncovered open pipe (there was a rag but it wasn't sealed properly.)

A few minutes of frantic grabbing about with long nose bent pliers retrieved it. A mandatory inclusion in any plenum pull should be dozens of rags. As soon as a pipe is removed, stuff the orifices with rags.

Had a look at the bores today, a few (4-5) scores on the bore i could see, i dont think they are of significant depth. I will post some pics later on.

I know for a fact that Eric has a borescope, as Chrispy said he can definitely check it out for you

    Yer pix M8.
What do the piston tops and head faces look like?
If they arent showing significant signs of peppering then your most likely allright.
Marks in the bore?? Well can you feel them or just see them?
