Do i have an issue with my diff ?

    Hey guys,
Been a while since I posted a technical question, so this could be interesting >.<
Basically now that the car is nicely tuned and serviced, and having stuck a boost controller in, on low I?m running her on 8psi (12 on high). Anyway even on low boost, she now tends to kick out at the rear a lot more then she use to. I?m use to the zed doing silly things and kicking out ever now and then, especially in the wet, but for some reason she is a lot more fidgety then she use to be. The other day I put my foot on the acc just a little harder then the standard light touch, still probably less then ? of the pedal and she kicked out to the right on me, was nice flat smooth road, I recovered and easied off and then back on a little and she almost kicked out again to the left ? Am use to her doing things like that on bends where you accelerate to hard, but now she?s doing it more whether on bends or straight lines and on starts.

Could this be a diff issue? do you think my diffs blown / needs an oil change etc. I just can?t put a finger on the problem, I mean other then putting on a single piece tailshaft and making her run cleaner (ie more power now that we?ve fixed engine issues like injectors etc) there is no real reason she should be so jumpy. I mean I don?t really care, its kinda cool and you really have to be on your toes with her now a days, but I?m worried if some one else jumps in they might not be expecting it and just want to know if this is normal behaviour for the zed or if something is a-miss.

    Cheers peeps
    Adrian

Sounds like crap tyres to me :D
I have the same prob on stock boost, running crappy falken ziex :whatever:

    What tyres do u have?
might be a good idea to get under the back of ur zed and have alook at ur bushings as well

Either there is something wrong with your tyres/suspension setup, or you have a "loose nut" on the steering wheel.:p

My car produces 272rwkw on 18psi and NEVER unsticks the tyres or skips sideways unless I do something really stupid.

It's a poor tradesman that blames his tools.:p:rolleyes::zlove:

LOL Chili >.< okay fairs fair, I might be a loose nut, but I know how to drive a car. Definitely not tyres, it came with falkens and the very first mod I did was dump em and got myself a really nice tyre and wheel setup.

I reckon the bushes are warn out cause I remember seeing them last wheel alignment and thought ?crap gotta change those soon? and it could also be the suspension as I got Tein?s on there from japan, can?t remember which of the 2 types, but either way, never really been happy with my suspension setup and really probably need to look into it. I just thought the way she?s been carrying on lately that the LSD might be on the brink or playing up?. Speaking of which do the zed?s have a limited slip diff ? I think they do but again never really taken the time and attention to the diff.

Okay so if the bushes are worn out, your saying this has a direct effect to the cars handeling? like really noticeable? And what about suspension, mines quite stiff at the moment, I assume that?s not great for power down either.

On 8psi she?s only got 206rwkw, I get up to 242 or 252 whatever when I put her on high boost (which is quite rare) so really its not me being a nut with 206rwkw?s, it is something with the setup of the car and I?ve never been one to tinker with gearing ratio?s or suspension setup, really most major part lacking in my automotive knowledge? then again I?ve never done track testing or any form of car classes so I?m not expecting to be an expert, but for me suspensions always been about trial and error and finding the perfect balance, and I?m really an A+B=C kinda brain, so I?m really not sure what my next step should be. Do I take it to a suspension specialist and get them to do some tests? Can I take it to John at UAS and have them do a look over and with their experience and knowledge tell me which parts are worn out and need work ??? What do you experts recommend.

MRC lad, i have heard good things from them and was there the other day and he had 4 Zeds in his workshop. Member Oni has a post in "Non Z-Related" about being real happy about the service too.

    Call MRC on 02 9029 1592 and say your from www.aus300zx.com :)

Yeah Mark helped me out with an injector problem and the rest last time i took her in. Both him and John know their stuff, both also really busy and probably dont have the time to nut out the real problem and at the cost per hour, i'd like to isolate the issue a little before leaving it with em
But cheers, definitly worth the mention.

I had a rear shock fail and all the car wanted to do is chatter the tyre even off boost.

what size tyres do you have,. i knew a guy running 15s on his z!!! yes 15s smaller than stock. and it used 2 smoke everywhere he loved. and though his z was hell powerful!

If you know the bushes are worn out, why do you suspect the diff ?

Warn bushes means the rear end it loose to move around as it pleases.

But if it kicks out to one side, it means that one side gets more power or the geometry has changed so it is not pushing straight.

Get under the back end and play with the hicas outer ball joints, sometimes you can't tell if its bad unless you take the arm off, but if one is no good then that wheel will steer at will and make the back end kick out even on a strait road.

Check it and fix it before you crash it

Take it to Con Rouggos at Pedders Granville(James Ruse Drive, Granville. 9897 2122). He is an expert on Z32 suspension. I have sent many Zed owners there, all have been happy with the results.:zlove::zlove:

Sounds like you suspension to me!

It may possible that something has worn out or the settings (shocks and springs) may not be ideal for the road conditions you are driving in. As many of the others have stated, one little worn bush or arm can make a Zed do strange things under acceleration.

The DirftZed was spinning constantly when being put into a left hand drift at Simmons Plains in Tassie. Brought it back in had a good look over the rear suspension in the pits and found a loose hicas arm. Swapped this, sent it back out and it was like another car. Moral of the story one little worn thing can direct your steering geometry/and car in all sorts of strange directions.
