Disturbing noise with the clutch in

Last night I got home from the Great Ocean Road cruise. Parked up on the grass, washed the salt off the Z, then drove her into the car port for the night.
Tonight I got in to move it, and as soon as I put the clutch in (while running) it made this awful noise. It wasn't really a metallic grinding or a crunch, it just sounded like something rubber was rubbing on something else.

Uploaded this video. At the start the car is running, you can hear me get in, put the clutch in ("squeak"), take the clutch out ("squeak"), put the clutch in again ("squeak"), then you can hear the noise.
Then I rev it to see if it makes any difference. Doesn't seem to, but the noise kind of gradually slows down while the clutch is in.
When I get off the clutch, it disappears completely.

I can take a better vid, but for all I know there's something in there shredding itself, so I'm not keen to keep the car running unless I have some inkling of what's going on.
And I currently have no idea.

A few too many stand-stills and clutch-kicks perhaps?

Sounds like a rooted Clutch Throwout Bearing and or Pressure Plate fingers.:zlove:

Agreed, sounds like throwout bearing. Cheap part but have to remove the gearbox to replace it.

On a related note, the bearing I got with my JWT clutch kit was all bent up and seized out of the box:( Was pretty disappointed.

Does it sound like this in the car?

Okay. Assuming that's what it is, can I drive it? Should I?
Is gearbox removal the sort of thing that's easy for a mechanic with the right set of jacks and hoists, or is it gunna cost me in labour?

It's actually the opposite of that guys problem. His noise is when the clutch peddle is out, my noise happens when the clutch is pushed in.
And it doesn't sound like that, it's less interesting that that. Just a low pitched grinding.

dont forget to change the spigot bearing while you have it out, my mechanic only charged $280 labour only to take out gearbox, go get flywheel machined ,new thrust bearing and change clutch while its out then put it back together

I've been doing some reading. People seem to think it could break at any moment, and if it does it'll be a major issue.
But getting it fixed without driving it is gunna be a lot harder.

Make sure to get your clutch pivot re-lubricated (the squeak noise) or even better replaced with the 350z pivot and fork otherwise you run the risk of having the ball shear off leaving you sitting at the lights with no clutch :(

I'll have that squeak attended to :)

I've gotten a quote of $800. He's lead me to believe that the TO bearing breaking will cause some excessive pressure on the clutch, and that since the whole area is open it may as well be replaced. Any recommendations of the accuracy of that?

The other thing is, if what I've read about the possibility of it breaking is true, somewhere local might be the best option. And this guy is local.

    800 is chirp.

the throwout bearing when working is what applies pressure on the pressure plate and engages the clutch. I doubt it being broken (in suspension) will have enough force to apply enough pressure on the plate.

800 to remove box and replace? while hes there... you may as well change your clutch kit and rear main seal!!!! :)

    ...chirp?

800 to do the clutch as well I believe.

you DONT CHANGE THE CLUTCH WITHOUT MACHINING THE FLY WHEEL.

They wont warrantee the clutch without a flywheel skim.
