"Slang name for a GT2860R (GT28RS) Turbo Usually used in conjunction with a Nissan SR20DET powerplant. Can produce in upwards of 350HP with accompaning mods. Known mostly for lightning spool time and huge torque increases."
what mods do you recommend? Would a forged build with stock reco heads and AMS manis do these turbos justice? or would the lack of head work/cams see them being under utilized?
Still a good turbo choice in that situation for big power. Probably no more lag than some of us high flow owners have
got 28r and sticking with them, aint worth the effort to sell them and get the potato's, im sure the 300 kw circa 28r will be more than sufficient to wrap around a pole and kill myself with..
Further Information When the time comes to rebuild my engine and replace the turbos I'm fitting a pair of Disco Potatos best price I can find is through Coz - $2595. Garrett 300ZX GT2860R (Disco Potato) Ball Bearing Turbo Kit FYI: The Garrett GT2860RS is also commonly known as The Disco Potato Turbo. The turbo originally got its name from the paint colour of the Nissan Sentra that it was originally installed in. The GT2860RS turbo won't produce massive power on the dyno. Normally on a SR20DET it will make in the range of 250-280rwhp. However, the Disco Potato Turbo produces unbelievable torque and response for a turbo its size. For that reason the GT2860RS has become very popular with drifting and circuit racing drivers who want to beat the competition. The disco potato is also pure joy to use on a street car as the minimum lag means you'll be quickly on boost and away. The GT2860RS is most popular on engines such as the Nissan CA18DET and SR20DETas it is an easy upgrade for the standard cast T25 manifold as well as both these engines are very popular choices for many car enthusiasts. The GT2860RS is spectacular on any engine ranging from 1.8L up to 3.0L. The turbo is rated from 250hp up to 360hp. Because these turbos are so popular on the Nissan SR20DET engines Garrett manufacturers two different types of compressor-housings. Garrett has a standard compressor-housing available which is a universal fit for all vehicles. Garrett?s second compressor-housing is to specifically fit a Nissan S15 SR20DET. This allows both the intercooler and induction pipes to bolt straight onto the turbo so it is an easy and quick installation. The SR20DET compressor-housing style is only available in a 0.86 turbines A/R. The GT2860RS Disco Potato Turbo is a ball bearing turbo meaning it will generally spool 15% sooner than the same turbo with a journal bearing CHRA.
That's a copy and paste from a article form years ago that was talking about the disco potato. 15% quicker using the technical definition of lag is what it means to me
A journal GT28RS and ball bearing GT28RS will start spooling at the same time eg.. 3500rpm the journal will reach full boost at say 4900rpm the ball bearing will reach full boost at 4600rpm thats where the quicker boost response comes from when taking foot off the accelerator and back on again .ballbearing spools quicker to what your boost setting is.
The A/R 0.86 is fine for 2 litre engines. You nee dthe smaller one A/R 0.63 for 1.5 litres like our cars. If you like LAG get the bigger housing. All hell will break loose but much later.
