Just replacing out the black bezel of my gauge cluster and noticed a clear difference between them. My old one (top of picture) is out of my 93' AusSpec and the one underneath is one out of an unknown model year (most likely JapSpec). It's clear to see at the base of the new one there is extra bulb holders. On the other side, there is blue defusers to which the light comes out and projects the light towards the gauges. I wonder if it provides better light? It would be interesting to compare which set up looks better...Robbo if you see this thread, what Z did this come out of? Anyway...thought its something good to know and add to the knowledge base if it wasnt known.
Maybe the bottom one is out of a later model z with the warning lights in the cluster as opposed to under it, just speculation here.
Nope none of that... Every thing is the same but the extra "illumination" globes underneath. Oh and after fitting everything into the white base from the unknown model I found the plugs on the back are arranged differently... I thought no biggy, ill just make sure I plug them in the right way around... But the wiring are also in different pins.... Or in other words same plugs, but the wires are in different pins...I've had to put everything back into my original white base
I have those too, can't see what they illuminate though. They don't interfere with the blue dash lughts
What year is your Z? I'm wondering if it was an early over engineered design or a later development to the lighting.
Not sure Dean... They get their illumination from above by the main globes. This seems to be more of a generalised spread of what would be the stock bluey green colour...anyways I didn't have enough globes to fill them up so I've left them empty... That's can be a "one day job" Could possibly be a TT gauge... So TT's have them NA's don't?
Cam i remember reading a thread on the US forums regarding the bottom globes. I cant remember what their purpose is, but if i remember correctly, if you put globes in them, they do get brighter. I think the thread was about led conversion. Thats all i can remember, so hope that helps Abraham
All zeds have this from factory, they project light up onto the cluster from the front, help to even the spread of light from the front of the cluster and make the odometer readable at night. Common to get rid of them when going to led's since an led replacement will be too bright. I've experimented with tinting the stock bulbs but found the best thing to do is to just remove them altogether and block the holes so no dust gets in.
Well not all Zeds because my 93' clearly didn't come with them No little cut-outs where the light would come out either....so its not like the bulb holders were just removed. The LED conversions are a POS....Hot spots galore! And any other colour other than white leaves the redline section of your Rev gauge one ugly ass colour. In the end (if y'all remember all my experiments) the best improvement to the gauge cluster by 10 fold was just four simple Narva T10 Arctic Blue globes that fit into the stock holders, still running them today, and are still the stock colour but sooo much brighter...You cant go past incandescent globes. Especially when the cluster was designed for incandescent bulbs....not LEDs
It should have them, my 93 did. Also, nothing wrong with the right design led's some are crappy others are good. Oh, and my red led's leave the redline a nice bright red colour
Hey Cam, In the later model cluster this is what I found; As I had brought a brand new front clear cover for my cluster upgrade, I swapped all these parts into my new cluster. As it was linked to the rear circuit board I thought it was needed for something. Also believe it or not, their is a OEM LED globe for the airbag warning light in the later model clusters.
Thanks Adam and Dean. Dean, It's interesting to see how your airbag globe is wired to the two screw in points to deliver power to the globes underneath. Which is really odd as where the globe goes in has the power pick up points (just like all the other globes).
