Hey guys, I got my Z just over a month ago and today for the first time gave the DIY dignostics reading a go as shown in the tech page. This has led to the discovery of my car showing a code 34. I did abit of reading up on it and found it's relatively common and that people tend to just bypass it to avoid safety boost. My car was only imported about a year and a half ago.

    My questions....
    1. How do i know (without going and buying a good after market boost gauge) if it's in safety mode or not?

    2. Is it possible to find out how long the error's been around for? i.e. did i wreck it or did the previous owners....

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Justin

    IB ?????

Yes, you will be in safety boost ...>>

lower boost with richer fuel mapping. It's probably not the det sensor itself but the wiring.

Error lasts 50 starts. So you know how long (max) it's been around.

you can reset ECU using Datascan or other software.

Only fill with 98 RON - BP 98, Optimax, Mobil Synergy 8000 or Caltex 98. Don't use Gull or others. (Some will say only use BP 98 - your call).

Check timing. Is it at 15 degrees BTDC? If more advanced, the liklihood of detonation is increased.

    Ensure no other error codes.

If all this adds up, I would use the (1 mg OHM ???) resistor workaround to override the circuit.

Assumption is that this is a reasonably stock engine.

Agree with IB. Check wiring - i.e. clean all connectors.

My Ausspec N/A is running at 17 degrees but pretty much stock everywhere else. I have checked/cleaned all connectors and they seem good. Car shows code 34. I run it on 98 RON. I therefore assumed 18-24 months ago that the sensor was not working correctly and have bypassed it. Have since done 25-30,000 ms. All OK so far. Car is a DD.

    Cheers,

    Peter

    See Tech Index /Detonation

A 1megohm resistor is req'd to bypass, but beware!

    Refer Tech article.

It's usually the wiring between the sensor and the connector ...>>

that fails. Some times the cam solenoid is plugged into the det sensor connector and vice versor.

    I read those tech articles....

To be honest i'm fairly new to the whole thing and dont have the greatest technical knowledge with these ever so advanced machines.... so i'm not sure about the timing. How can I tell that the previous owner hasn't already bypassed it? The boost kicks quite hard... if u told me it was in safety boost before i did that check i wouldn't have believed it for a second, but now this error has shown itself I realise i really don't have much to compare it to...

If the previous owner had bypassed it, you should have code 55 ...>>

the bypass tricks the ECU into thinking the sensor is OK.

Your best bet is to head to the Vic mini tech day this weekend.

    ahhhh damn why this w/e!!!!

Unfortunately I have one of those "compulsary/must attend" family birthday functions this sunday, plus I'm pretty far away from it. Wish i could

So it's 100% that I'm on safety boost? Thats crazy.... I'm gonna be to scared to drive it when I get it fixed up!!

yes, if its throwing a code 34....

you are most definitely on safety boost. I will bet my left testicle. And yes, once fixed, your car will feel different and you will experience what a TT zed should really feel like.

    Cheers

yes, if its throwing a code 34....

Ok so once the problem is fixed (hopefully just the wiring) the code 34 will dissapear and i'll get a 55 and it'll run properly? Sweet!!

Thanks heaps for the tips folks

Code 34 will mean you are running in safety fuel and ignition maps!

This is good as reduces the likely hood of damage to the engine till it is fixed! This is the idea.
1 Check the wiring as Pete said.
2 Keep it fueled with 98 RON fuel
3 Dont thrash or lug it
4 Get the timimg checked and set at 15 degrees
5 Get bypass done or sensor fixed and your on the way.

Meanwhile follow the first 3 points and chances of damage are low.

    any mechanics or auto elecs...

Sorry to continue to bore you all with the same old error 34 stuff, but I had a quick look today at the wiring and came to the conclusion that i have no chance in hell of working any of it out my self.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic or auto elec who would be able to have a proper look at it? I really wanna clear the damn code but don't really wanna risk the bypass at this stage.... would rather get the wiring and connections professionally looked at.

I've heard that getting a "professional" to work on a Z around Melbourne is hard and figured alot of you guys would probly know alot more than ur average auto elec bout my car so if any of you feel confident about looking at the wiring I'd gladly throw a few $ at you to have a look rather than getting stuffed around by bigger business's. Gimmie a PM if anyone's interested.

Thanks heaps for puting up with my "newbie" ways guys!!!

there is the possability that your car is still boosting correctly even

with code 34. 2 mods could have been done that would bypass 34.
    a. boost controller of some description - overrides ecu request to lower boost
    b. remapped safety boost fuel maps in your ecu-,meaning your ecu has been rechipped

a long winded way of fixing the problem now, but 10 years ago i suspect it was quite a common solution.

    my 2 cents

I would first try the knowledgable members around Melbourne.

This will help to build a great support group while at the same time adding to your 300Z expertise. It has benefits:

They know the car intimately, and therefore know what to look for; They help you learn about your car - you get to do some things yourself and gain in your level of confidence; They're cheap (usually work for a beer or a Chardonay - particularly if you're in QLD - Hi Baz!!!)

You have someone to share your experience while you're swearing because "some a$$hole put that bolt in there!!! You gotta be kidding - who'd do something as sadistic as that - pr!ck !!!"

and further observations of a similar ilk.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Damn, i think i need to look into this as well. I just used 1/4 tank of Vortex in 32kms, with REGULAR driving!

To the tech day this weekend and let us have a look at it. It could save him money,or at the very least provide a far better diagnosis.

    Hooray!!!!

hey guys, thanks for all your helpful advise... Believe it or not.... i fixed something myself!! hooray!! hehe.... i know its not that much of an achievement.... but after reading up on it more and cleaning connectors like you all suggested, i d/c the battery for an hr or so, then sure enough its on code 55. Glad it was as simple as that.

    Thanks again guys, much appreciated
