Hi We are having a problem, one of many, with our newly acquired TT. We have an annyoing, loud 'droning' noise that seems to come from the rear of the car at cruising speed of around 80 kph. We replaced the tail shaft, but that didn't fix the noise. Any ideas? Thanks.
Is it a resonating kind of droning (like exhaust) or maybe the fuel pump? Does it change pitch or go away depending on the amount of throttle?
Received by PM as post didn't work: So new tailshaft... that leaves anything else in the rear subframe lol. Diff? I know my tyres would drone at certain speeds on my other car until I had them changed...
well, it did it with the tyres that came on it, too. noise is still there after new tyres went on so we can rule that out. guess they'll just have to put it up and look under there. our mechanic briefly drove it and listened, but at the time didn't have time to really look under there further than what they previously did when they did all the other work on it. guess it's back to the drawing board, just thought others might have heard similar noise we were just wondering what more in the way of huge money we're gonna get hit with with this car :-(
You replaced the tail shaft with what, a one piece, another stock tailshaft, if you used another stock tail shaft, did you replace the center bearing?
Try it with Overdrive off. That will eliminate factors relating to engine/trans. If the noise is still apparent it narrows it down to the rotating assembly from the tailshaft back. Perhaps the new tailshaft is unbalanced... Another long shot, but scored wheel bearings? I would expect them to make noise at lower speeds as well though.
Take it to a mechanic who is willing to take a look, or you can do this yourself if your game. Get it up on a hoist (or stands) and with the car in drive and the wheels turning, use a long screwdriver againt your ear to listen to where the whine is comming from. Does the whine vary with speed or engine rpm? A big whine from the back is what mine had when my diff was fubar. I rekon your diff is on the way out. How many kms does the car have? And dont say 80,000kms . If it is your diff, try replacing the oil, or pick up a 2nd hand diff, its not really worth the rebuild.
wouldn't suprise us, the car had a bit of a tragic life til we adopted him he has 176,000 km on his clock.......we do have a spare diff (we had to buy a whole other car to get parts to make him roadworthy), so at least we have that going for us !!! it varies with speed, as it is quiet below 80, then comes in from 80 on up :-(
