I have 2 1989 Z32's; both have cruise control switch on RHS pod, but no adjustment switches on steering wheel.

One does not have the diaphragm & electronic unit & cable at all!

Does cruise control even work on early models without the steering wheel controls? Cause the owners manual shows steering wheel controls.

it wasnt standard on all cars. optional.

the pod with the buttons on it is frequently replaced, they break somethimes. so theres no garauntee that your cars were released with cruise. same wih the steering wheels, often changed over

This is the problem with buying used cars.
Pieces get broken & are changed with "anything will do" parts.
If the cruise control system is not connected, it probably doesn't have cruise fitted, perhaps just a cruise control switch pod.
The steering wheel should have buttons, the wheel has probably been changed with the non cruise type.

Cruise Control also came out on a stalk as well as the steering wheel - you could have either, you will have to check both

Forget that one and focus your effort on the other one.

There is a thread, someone made their own cruise buttons. You need switches and diodes. I think you should just buy the horn pad and switches from someone wrecking and then find out if you have a working cruise setup.

The stalk controls were available on the later model Zeds that had airbags, for obvious reasons.

I have put the buttons on my Zed.

i had an aftermarket steering wheel on mine when i bought it but no buttons. i made one up and placed it on the steering whell. See my thread here.

I also have fitted an aftermarket steering wheel, but will have a look for the lever-switch I think.

So where is the cruise-control 'ecu' at?
Not sure if I have one ;)

I connected the diaphragm to 12v & it hums along. The other two wires seem to pull the cable slowly or fast.
I'm guessing the one that pulls slow just counteracts the throttle spring to hold position and the fast wire is to increase speed.
    Cable releases without 12v power.

    Yep

I went the way of the stalk lever myself and it bolts straight in - you just have to cut the steering column surround for the lever but the holes are already prefabricated onto the internal steering plastic parts

New ones cost US $50 plus postage from the US at Z1motorsports.com

The ASCD sits in front and below of the actuator/bracket / ASCD cable control unit- see tech section / manual / electrical section for a picture (page EL 98)

Sounds like it has the computer already and works fine but just needs a selector

When wiring - two of the stalk wires need to be reversed to work if changing from the button to the stalk
