I am looking for a good firewall to use... I am using AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky... I was using amshampoo firewall but for some reason it would not let me view my emails at all and would not let kaspersky update... I did a format and before that was using that same firewall but was also using nod32... Now that i have changed and using kaspersky i am looking for a firewall that will let me view my emails and let kaspersky update as well.. I tryed everything with the firewall to let kaspersky update etc but yeah just didnt want to work at all...

    Bloody computers LOL :D :p

    Any help would be great

what about a hardware based firewall

like what you would find in the average router?
Also, have you checked what port Kapersky is using to do it's update, if it's not a standard port number, you may have to open the port(s) in the firewall setup.

    artin ...there is no spoon

i use norton internet securities.....comes with antivirus, firewall, antispam, ad blocker and a few other stuff....dose the job well should check it out

might also wanna check out hardware firewall as well, like greg said.......have em both if u prefer, then we'll see if those hackers can get in lol

imho i think zone alarm professiona is the best program to use for a firewall. and for an anti virus option i recommend bit defender 9 unprofessional plus....thats biased because its what i use :p but i researched before downloading these and they were the best by far.... at the time but updates keep you safe 24/7

If youre using an ADSL router (not bridged) then a firewall is a waste of time. Outside hosts cant traverse the NAT unless you have some port forwarding rules in place.

Software firewalls are ALOT more trouble than they are worth, in fact alot of support calls at work for staff laptops are due to some tard installing a firewall and blocking themselves out of everything.

I had a router and use to use that firewall but we had a storm last year and yeah it dont work now :( kind of pissed off too... I got cable not adsl.. but also the firewall was blocking me from even getting emails.. I took it off and i could get them but even when it was installed i turned off the mail check thing on the anti virus and it would let me check too hmmm but with nod32 everything was fine with the firewall and that program... Trying to work out what port kaspersky is using...

dont like norton takes too much mem hehe :D not a fan of zone alarm either and some have had some issues with this anti virus and zone alarm together as well..

This anti virus does pick up alot more then what norton does as well i have done some research myself and tryed a heap but i like the fact that nod32 and kaspersky does not use too much mem which is good unlike some anti virus do...

Computers make my brain go crazy LOL :p :D

    100% agree

90% of the computers we see here where people can't get on the internet, is due to the firewall blocking something. You know those little windows that popup "XYZ program is trying to access the internet, do you want to allow/deny" etc etc. Well click "deny" on the wrong thing and presto internet no worky anymore.

Worst offending software in my experience PC-Cillin 2007.

Is your cable modem a router ? If yes end of story.

hey mate, any reason why you switched to kaspersky? i tried kaspersky alongside nod32 for 6 months and nod32 worked better for me and less intrusive as it doesn't say "your PC needs to be scanned bla bla bla" after a certain period.

i'm behind the router's built in firewall and haven't had any viruses since the mid 2005. IMO they work well and you'll be better off buying another router than wasting time with software firewalls. :D

I wanted to try kaspersky it does work well as nod32 did but at times i got sick of trying to update nod32 and having to put in a username and password everytime i did an update for it hehe :D kaspersky is free so yeah and is working well does not come up with annoying messages like some bloody do...

Yeah i might have to buy another router i guess sigh more $$$ stupid PC's!

I'm a big fan of Agnitum's Outpost Pro

It's a fantastic piece of software!

At home my computer sits behind an OpenBSD machine that acts as a gateway (firewall, nat etc.,) but I use outpost on my laptop whenever I'm connected to wireless networks.

I'm an ex-user of Tiny firewall (which is pretty darn intrusive compared to most,) but covers almost all the bases. I quit using it when the parent company unwisely decided to stop development.

o/t: Nod32 is the best antivirus program available today. Kaspersky is quite robust, but can be a major resource hog.
