Simple question..how much does a compression test normally cost?
Recommended places in Brisbane to get it done..AutoTech, AMEC etc do them?

    Cheers

Either Gavin Wood or AMEC can do... Get them to repeat

the test twice to rule out discrepancies...

    Good luck mate:thumbsup:

You'll have to ask them, but estimate 1-1.5hrs ish labour

    for a proper job.

And what peace of mind would a Comp. test give? You can get a

good indication using datascan, by dropping off cylinders individually and seeing what the difference is ie rough running, rev drop, O2 sensor reaction. If the difference is minimal that cyl. is not doing much work, and THEN you fault find- Spark plug , coil, connectors, comp. test etc. Peace brother:zlove:

Leakdown test would be a better indication of engine health

Ok I have heard many different stances..

Baron - your idea with using datascan makes the most sense.
In the small amount of reading I've done, I got the impression a leakdown test was a step to take after finding compression test results were poor, and engine thus needs further diagnosis.

Correct. Leakdown is a diagnostic tool. The cyl. being checked is

at TDC compression and air escaping out the crank case means the rings arn't sealing, air out the exhaust means an exhaust valve is leaking, air out the intake manifold means an intake valve isn't sealing. It's a little more complicated than that, but thats the general idea.
