Clutch Problems/ possible dodgy mech

had an exedy HD clutch put in about 4 months ago. worked fantastic til last week when i noticed that i get a horrible screeching noise when foot is completely off the clutch pedal. i find that at low revs i can just rest my foot on the pedal and the screeching stops. i dont actually 'push' the pedal in at all just literally rest my foot until i can feel that i would actually have to push my leg to go any further.

i have had 2 opinions from 2 mechanics. installer said the thrust bearing was gone, another unbiased mech said it was the spigot bearing which SHOULD of been replaced when the clutch was.

obviously i dont want to have to pay $350 for by gearbox to be dropped when i dont feel that this is in any way my fault.

err i dont think i should say who on an open forum...
i just need some further insight so as i can get a good idea as to the problem. because if he spigot bearing is buggered the installer should pay to replace it. but if the thrust bearings gone the mech said that exedy should pay under warranty. either way i can see this going back and forth and me in the end being out of pocket:mad:

It's not likely to be the spigot as it won't make noise if you haven't got the clutch depressed all the way. Thrust bearing is my bet and it could be due to faulty install (no grease) or manufacture (not likely)

If it was faulty manufacture Exedy will pay for a new bearing, not the labour to change.

Have had an Exedy thrust bearing fail not so long ago (on a Toyota Corrola of all things).
Symptoms were exactly as you describe, in this case the bearing was proven to be at fault as we removed the box, changed the bearing & nothing else - didn't even touch what we didn't need to. A new bearing was fitted with the same amount of grease etc & the problem was gone & never returned.

Z32s don't run a spigot bearing as such - it's actually a self oiling type of bush and as said it is doubtful this is the problem.

If it is pure lack of grease causing this noise a good mechanic should be able to get some in there via the clutch lever hole, just remove the rubber boot and carefully place some in there with a screw driver or similar.
If the noise goes away point proven, if it doesn't change the bearing.

Why would it be the thrust/throw-out bearing if it goes away when you press the clutch which is engaging the bearing, while the clutch pedal is up the throw-out bearing should be stationary.

This will ussually happen if the throw out bearing is dry, when the clutch is released the bearing is still in contact with the pressure plate but has no load on it, the squeal is the bearing virating as it rotates. When then pedal is pushed it loads the bearing and stops it vibrating. Eventually it will begin to growl when the pedal is depressed.
I would say it is from a lack of lube. Has the gearbox got the bell housing dust cover fitted?. Not having this fitted will allow water to get in there and cause surface rust and contamination of the bearing.

    2ndd .... 2nded? ..... seconded ? .... what he said LOL! :)

The bearing we removed from the above mentioned Corrola seemed fine to look at and felt fine by hand but in the car it made noise - not what customers like.
I wonder if Exedy are getting some dry bearings through from time to time...

All the Exedy bearings I've had are SKF's, good quality stuff which we use at work all the time (albeit alot larger) and never had trouble with them.

I have never had a problem with exedy gear, but anything is possible. I would bet on workmanship than parts in this instance.

Yeah most likely right - is only one case I know of and maybe this one, hardly makes a trend I guess. I will still be using them in any case :)

mine does the same thing and my mechanic said dont worry about it...

I wonder if it is the contact face of the bearing just touching the pressure plate, but not enough to acutally spin the bearing
