Clutch problem? Please help

    Hey guys,

So over the last few weeks of driving my z, I've noticed some difference in how responsive (?) my clutch is. Before the process of moving was putting it in first and pulling the clutch pedal out until the catch point and slowly releasing pressure on it whilst accelerating. Now it's more like I'm battling with the clutch to get movement. When moving off in first gear, it is very slow and I have to be careful or it will stall. I'm thinking that my clutch disk is dying and needs replacing as I can't think of any other reason. This is my first manual, has anyone experienced something similar here? If so, what's my problem and how can I fix it?

    Thanks!

Have you checked the Clutch Fluid in the Clutch Master Cylinder?
Check for Fluid level(and also try "Bleeding" the Clutch Master Cylinder).
Also check the operation of the Clutch Actuating Cylinder(on the side of the Bell Housing)for full range movement/Fluid leaks.
Do a complete Clutch Fluid change/Bleed and Adjustment.
If this makes little or no improvement, then your Clutch Plate/Pressure Plate may need to be replaced.:zlove::br:

    Thanks for replying!
Few questions, the clutch fluid level can be seen on the little reservoir near the firewall correct?
How would I go about bleeding the clutch master cylinder and would you know where that is?
Also the clutch actuating cylinder, is that near the reservoir?

There are many write ups on the forums and even YouTube vids on how to bleed the system
It's a great start to get to know your Z :zlove:
    Cheers

Alright, suppose I should get into this then, I'll get straight to it :). Thanks!

Are you getting any 'sticking' feeling at the bottom of the pedal, like it doesn't quite want to return?

Sticky feeling? No not at all, why is that?

Happens when the little dowel between the slave cylinder and fork wears down too short and the slave piston starts almost popping out. Gives a weird intermittent pedal feel.

If the clutch engagement point has moved right to the the top (beginning) of it's travel then it's a good candidate for worn clutch plate.

I've read and re-read this and still a little confused by what you're describing.

If the clutch is wearing out you will usually find that it starts to slip, ie the engine will rev but the clutch does not engage. Is this what you're experiencing?

With the greatest respect for the OP, I would suggest that his knowledge of Automotive Theory and/or Practical Mechanics is at best, very limited. This would probably be one instance where consulting a reliable Workshop might be the best possible solution to his problem(followed by some intense study of a publication on "Basic Automotive Principles".
This should not be seen as criticism, but rather as Positive long-term assistance(we ALL have to learn the Basics before we tackle the harder jobs).:zlove::br:

I have tested this, I'm sure that is not the case. I drove in 4th gear and pressed the accelerator hard, my revs should have shot up with and not have been proportional with movement, but everything was fine.

Yes you are correct, this is my first car and my knowledge is very basic at the moment. I am trying to learn more and more but thank you! I will consult a local mechanic about it :)

Clutches wont always slip when worn, if it's over-rated for the torque the engine makes you can get right down to the rivets and still handle full load.

Having someone look at it to get a better idea of how it's behaving is a good idea, there's a few good SA members around although coming up to Christmas possibly a little harder to find one with spare time.
