Hey all, I thought I would post up a thread on what I have done over the last 2 days as it could be of interest for some.

Basically have you ever though, ?my roof plastics and seals look like shit, so does my cowl and windscreen wipers but I cant quite justify the new prices on coz just yet?. Well that's what I thought and had a product suggested to me by MickW awhile ago. Now I finally got around to trying it out.

Its VHT Roll bar and chasis spray paint that I picked up from Autobarn for $17 a can, I needed 2 to do all the wipers, the cowl and all roof rubbers and the rubbers on the doors and rear quarter window.

Now for the "before" pics to show the issues

U can see the faded black in this one

    Preparation
This was easily the most time consuming part. Taping off all the areas with newspaper took ages. If doing the wipers don't forget to tape up the blades as a black window in the rain could be interesting.

Its definitely worth the time however as it will save time later as I found dodgy areas of tape lead to problems like this.

My response to this was ****!!!!! But after I calmed down I got some thinners and went to town on the dodgy bits, embarrassingly there was quite a few:eek:. This stuff was used a fair bit, just apply some to dampen a cloth then wipe off the offending paint. The original paint was undamaged.

So that?s a rough how to, now for the after shots

This was definitely worth my time as a cheap fix for shitty looking seals and similar. Very happy with the finished product and from a distance looks like new. When you get up close you can spot some of the problems, I'm talking right up close here, still looks great from 1m.

    Timeframe : 6hrs

Cost: 2 cans of spray paint, $17each
    1 can of thinners $10
    Masking tape: $5
    Newspaper $1.10
    Total $50.10

Technical Difficulty: Easy, anyone who has worked with me knows that I'm useless at most practical things and I was able to do it.

    :zlove:

good job and a significant improvement in appearance .....

i have "plasti dip" to do the same job .. but two months of schisenhausen weather has made sure no spray painting type jobs will happen ... !!!

Ah man. Admire the time and effort but some spots looked real hairy lol!

You do realise you can remove all the wipers and cowls in like 2 minutes right? You ended up masking the entire car

interested to see how it holds up in the weather though.

Didn't realise about the wipers and cowls, but they were the easy ones to mask, so not all bad

Fingers crossed with the weather, sits undercover and won't be driven for a few days.

The front wipers can get very stuck and hard to pull off without a puller. Its a good fix I did mine years ago. Did the rubber seals with plastidip but finding it in black in a pressure pack is hard.

What kind of puller did u use???

i used the same gear on my wipers, and used vht rubber bumper paint for the seals.

    good gear that ;)

The final result looks quite alright, but why on Earth would you NOT remove the Wiper Arms and Cowlings instead of painting them in-situ?
BTW, I'm guessing you play Cricket with a Hand-Grenade instead of a ball, because putting Thinners anywhere near your paintwork is tempting Fate to an extent I would never advise.
You would find it easier to slide the rubbers out of your Wipers before spraying, rather than Masking them up.

Good on you for giving it a go, but why make it harder for yourself than needs be?

Its supposed to pull off battery terminals but the drivers side was so stuck I just sprayed that one while it was still attached, which is a lot easier. I didn't paint the window cowls at all.

I think I got the puller from super crap or some where.

Alex ... there was a period when the Sydney distributors did not have stock for some months ... i kept in contact with them and scored mine a couple of months back ..

as i understand it, you can now only purchase direct from their website or their ebay site/shop ... seems that they no longer supply other retail outlets as they did 12 months or so back ...

i found them good to deal with via their website ...

as to the wiper removal, the one time i tried was an epic fail ... it was as if they were welded on .. !!!

I found some black plastidip at factory in Nerang off Ferry Road about a year ago but they only had black in a pot, none pressurised. I'll take a look on Ebay, I remember there used to be some on there from the USA.

Yea those wipers are really stuck! even with the puller I gave up and just did the drivers side still on the car and used a lot of newspaper, more than the OP of this thread, over spray sucks.

For anyone that try's this and gets over spray a clay bar and some elbow work should clean it up. Don't ask me how I know. :p

That all being said Baz, there's never been a better time to purchase new ones from COZ. ;)

i normaly do it with a light coat of teroson underbody deadner in the spray can ( it comes out very fine and thin) just a light coat of this to give it a even texture all over and it sticks to anything , then a coat of satin black

martins had his for a while, and its standing up to the weather so far, i might do a clear coat for added protection, but its really up to you

    Mitch Has one gear: GO

I did my rear wiper with metal primer and about 4 coats of matte black. No sealer. It is still flawless over 18 months later.
My front wipers on the other hand were done by a panelbeater as a 'courtesy job' when I had my bonnet resprayed. The prep must have been crap, as it is flaking off now, about 12 months on...

I could get pics, but you get the idea :)
