why not .... its a cat and for all intensive purposes it WILL do the job, and it was probably made by a company that supplies cats to several other makers, your beloved nissan cats probably came from the same manafacturer as the ones under a protron

Obviously there's a huge amount of confusion about cats and really there a dead simple device that does a very simple task for the enviroment.

A cats sole purpose is to burn off any unburnt fuels and to neturalise the really harm full burnt elements in the exhaust gases....

They do this by retaing heat from the exhaust fumes and using that stored heat to distroy those unwanted exhaust fume contaminantes from entering the air in their usual chemical structure.....

If a V8 supercar had cats fitted ...... that little flame-out we all love to see at the big back-off corners wouldnt be there....

Now ..... the not so simple bit ......

Each engine made by nissan / holden / jaguar or who ever ..... puts nasties out the exhaust, that engine size AND the fuel effeciency of that engine determins the size of the cat in BOTH the body size and the CPI thats required to bring the emmisions down to the required level set by Govts of the country that the engine is destined for.......

so,as simplified as I can make it,......... here's my example.....

If a manafacturer put a 253 V8 holden running duel 600cfm holleys into a suzuki then they'll need a massive cat with a high CPI count to get the emmissions down ........, at a quick guess that cat would be about 400mm long and have a cpi count of 400+

    however.......

if they take a 4age engine and modify the crap out of it.... like compound turbo and supercharge it ..... then the effeciency of that engine become very good (and powerfull), the emmisions therefore are very low so a 3inch cat with a CPI count of say 50 would do the job.

    so ......

your zed engine has a certain emmisions output level, that level requires a specific sized cat to counter the nasties you pump out into the air......

    Now the really trick bit......

a turbo hold a huge amount of heat....... remember I said before how the cat uses heat to burn off them ugly particles..... so does the turbo to a certain extent and this is how some of us can run a small cat that has a low CPI count ....IE: 100cpi cats

On the other hand a really well modified engine and an excelent tune can take those emmissions to a point where manafacturers dont need to put certain emmissions equipment on a particular car.... Holdens Supercharged VS-VT series V6 for example does NOT have a EGR valve from factory, the emmissions are low enough NOT to require it

    Now the fines bullshyte.......

The EPA can AND do issue fines under the act for non compliant emmission levels, those fines VARY a great deal and are dependant largely on the level of emmissions YOUR car is pouring out at the time of testing.

A truckie mate of mine was pinged for $9000 for a non compliant emmission level (he'd removed the reburn system from his WesternStar) and my brother-inlaw had a $4000 fine for no cats on his V8 plord pus-bucket ($2000 per missing cat) .......

So if you delete the cat or poke holes through the cells to "open her up" then expect a fine of about $2000 per cat you adulterate..... its not a question of being caught or not...... eventually your car will be tested be it at a roadside station of after a written request to attend a testing station, I know because I've been there
My zed was required to attend a EPA station for testing and it passed with the 100cpi cats....... just .......
mind you, if I hadnt fitted the new cats to replace the gutted std units that had been butchered by the previous owner (japan), then it would have been a fine of ~$4000

hope the mud is a tad clearer now :D

Kingy, does this mean we will have fully sick flames out of our exhaust if we dont have cats? :) LOL

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

So you didn't get done for your aftermarket cats Kingy? And Mitch did... urgh.

Thanks for the information - the detail is very welcome :) How did your friends get stung for that much?

    like I said ..... I passed ...... JUST !!!

and the reasons could be many and varied, Mitch and I have differing motor setups and exhaust systems, the guy that tested mine said I would have failed if the actual days temperature had of been in the 30's instead of the cool 17degrees it was......
even so a different tune / turbo / injector size / actual exhaust system material (stainless or mild steel) / and pipe size, and even the position of the actual cat can have very significant effects on the actual readings the testers obtain.

for example, if you fit the cat down the rear of the car near the muffler then its ability to catylise the nasties is greatly deminished due to the heat loss through the system prior to the cat..... on the other end of the scale if it was fitted right at the turbo then the heat would make it far more effecient in its task, infact too effecient so then a lower cell cat could in theory do the exact same job, problem then becomes over heating and the cats do suffer and then fail
Manafacturers fit the cat as close as practicly posiable to the exhaust manifold so the heat loss is minimal yet far enough away so as not to burn out the cat .......
Yeah there is a forumla that manafacturers use and I cant recall the site where I found it but the very basic rule of thumb from what I recall was to measure the entire length of the system from the very end of the manifold to the tip of the outlet, the centre of the cat was placed at the 1/4 length mark and was moved foward or back by the pipe diameter X the pipe length of the pipe using a 2inch pipe as the zero mark..

EG:..... as simple as I can make it
4metre long system = the centre of the cat is fitted the 1metre mark from the exhaust manifold.

the exhaust pipe is a 4inch pipe so its 2inches larger than the zero mark
    therefore.....
    4metre length of pipe X 2inch bigger pipe = 8inches
so the cat is moved 8inches further foward of the 1/4 way mark.

yeah I know I've mixed metric and imperial but it was the easiest way for the example so most people could grasp the basic concept easily enough, the maths gets a tad ugly when you do it all in millimetres and could loose a few readers.
    ;)

Mate with the v8phord has a duel exhaust so BOTH outlets are tested and both outlets failed (because both cats were missing )
The missing cats allowed an amount of un-catylised material into the air and the fine was bassed on the volume of those particles the engine was putting into the atmosphere.

Mr WesternStar driver removed the re-burn "muffler" completely so his big diesel engine was pumping out massive amounts of unburnt shyte, the fine was again bassed on the amount being dumped into the air.

basically ....... he removed this junk......

and as a result the exhaust did this......

Which is a big NO NO these days

after reading last post i am so glad i managed to talk myself into a $120 fine for not transferring rego when the cop tried to send me to EPA on my birthday, was around the time the turbo's on my 89 got fried.
