Hey All Does anyone know for sure if having a centre brake light is the law, particularly in Queensland. I'm removing the stock spoiler and wasn't really excited about spending $200+ on the replacement centre brake light. Will I be defected without one? I've seen utes and vans driving around all over the place without them. Any insight? Thanks guys Gordo
I am going to remove mine soon, I already have the third brake light panel to put on after I do. Not sure what the law is with the brake light, but when you remove the spoiler it leaves a fair gap just under where the spoiler brake light is. That's if you have the spoiler that sits down on the boot? If you have a look you can prob see/feel some of the gap. Good luck. Fran
Pretty sure is the law, but you have to fill the gap left after spoiler removal anyway. Have a look through "Post Events" under "Black Baz's bling completed" and there are pic's of AZA's spoiler removal (thanks for the help AZA). You can see what we mean(AZA's reply 5th line down) will explain all
It surprises me that there would be a law stating you have to have to have center brake lights. There must be a million cars out there without them. I don't know about Queensland but I'm pretty sure you don't have to have em in Tas.
Its part of the ADR thats was introduced in 88 or 89. Which is why a High Mount Center Stop Light is part of Compliancing.
is it law in WA? i found it a bit random as you look at the size of the 300ZX brake lights on either side, compared to some other cars. i was under the impression that as long as you had left and right brake lights you'd be fine. i don't think you'd get pulled up, but on the chance that you did, you'd have to fix it etc., so may as well do it to save hassles later on
Cool I did forget that it would leave a large gap I might try QT as Baz suggested, just to be sure. I'm not THAT adverse to spending $223 (thanks to John from Cresta) but unfortunately he is out of stock at the moment. I've seen some at other places, but they're heading towards the $300 mark, bit harsh for a centre brake light I think. I think I'll just wait until early 2007 to remove my spoiler and I'll grab a brake light then. Thanks guys! Gordo
Nice one, thanks for that recommendation Vic, nice pics! I'm going to read the whole thread I think It would look ratsh!t without the light Cheers
You could get the red 300zx centre panel, convert it so it has neons behindi ti and hook it up to the brake lights system
As part of compliance i had a $20 light stuck to my hatch glass, cant even see it unless its lit. You dont need to have the light in the spoiler.
Definitive answer - it has been law since 1989 .... that all passenger vehicles must be fitted with a Center High Mount Stop Lamp, known in the trade as a CHIMSL. This is an AUSTRALIAN DESIGN RULE, and will apply to all states. Note that the phrase is passenger cars, which may possibly exclude utes, vans etc. It is an issue that would you probably never be pulled over for, but if a copper knew his stuff and wanted to get you for something - that could do it. Equally, if a post 1989 vehicle is presented for a RWC, then the inspector should be checking off that the CHIMSL is in roadworthy condition. A lot of them don't bother. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsafe/VSI%2013.pdf
Wrong on two counts ... The lamp must be no less more than 77mm lower than the bottom edge of the rear window, and words etc are not allowed - so the 300ZX lit up in red when you hit the anchors won't cut it.
hit the anchors, what an awesome staying. now i just want to have a conversation with someone about braking so i can say it
there you go RZM ..an awesome saying .. !!! the joy of youth .. !!!!! .. hey, jaybo .. that saying, in the days of rzm and myself, was about as common as your "awesome" is today ..!!! ..lol.. lol..!!!
I was thinking of doing that actually, but when Baron linked me to the pics of AZA "going brazilian" (love that term) it shows a massive gap in the boot where the wing used to be. So I think I'm just gonna go the official nissan centre brake light replacement. Cheers for the idea though
