when I checked the timing on a mates zed I found the CAS turned almost fully anti-clockwise to get at 15 deg btdc. The timing belt had recently been removed to change the cam-seals so the conclusion was that the belt had been installed one tooth out. So, yesterday I and a few others installed a new timing belt and we indeed found the old belt was one tooth out. We also found the auto-tensioner pin was nearly fully out so we adjusted this to about 3.5mm. Anyway, the intersting thing is that when we put the zed all back together and then checked the timing the CAS was not quite where I expected it to be when at 15 deg btdc. The CAS was still turned anti-clockwise although not quite as far as before. I'm a bit confused? Is it possible that when the CAS was removed to change the cam seals it was not put back in the exact same position or perhaps the ECU is not a stock unit and changing the timing (I have not checked if the ECU is a stock unit). Interestingly, the zed drives sweet. The motor idles pefectly and there is a quite and smooth acceleration. No strange vibrations, noises or hesitation. Doesn't blow any smoke either. So, I think the timing is correct but am confused about the CAS position? Help on this would be appreciated? 8D Cheers
Interesting...... My car is the same Zcar. When my timing is set on 15 degree's, the "bolt" is not in the centre position where I would expect it to be (see pic below). Yet, my belt is on properly, car runs fine and makes good power. I have a Hitec chiped ECU in my car, but I dont see how that would affect the position of the timing. If you find an answer please let me know, as I would be extremely interested. [image]http://users.bigpond.net.au/vader/cas.jpg[/image]Cheers
Mark..>> thanks for the photo. The CAS position I am refering to is the exact opposite to yours. In your photo the CAS has been turned clockwise of centre and in my instance it is anti-clockwise.Did you recently have the cam seals replaced?I am still confused?
Not sure.... my engine was out last august when I had the new heads put on, so I'm assuming that new cam seals were put on. How would this affect the CAS position??Cheers
I reckon...>> that it is possible to install the CAS housing slightly out of position after replacing the seals. I have a spare motor but it is not at my home. When I pick the motor up and bring it to my place I will remove the CAS sometime soon to check if this can be done, and then work out how to fix the positioning to make it look correct.Cheers
From memory I don't think you can install the CAS in any more than one position as the bolt holes are very precise and doesn't allow any rotational movement on the mounts. It's something I was concerned about when I pulled off mine to polish, but found I could unbolt and rebolt as many times as I wanted cos the mounts are one position only.
everything is keyed so it should all line up The only thing I can think of at the moment is that the keyway where the CAS lines up with the CAM as it goes onto the engine may have somehow bent/broke causing the CAS to be out of whack.
Never took it apart except to polish the two halves. I wouldn't like to speculate on it though. The sensor is held in position by a semi circular slot that fits into a semi circular half moon hole, so no chance of that being out.
Half moons I remember that Con had issues with his half moons being worn to the point that while driving, the timing was changing enough to be noticable. Eventually they failed so it might be worth checking this out.AB
I think you may be onto something..>> chewy. Perhaps the keyway is damaged requiring the CAS to be installed slightly out of alignment.
