my car gave me trouble again today..the check engine light turns on and wouldn't start..the motor cranks on but the engine does not start..I think something to do with fuel..also black smoke came out and some big sound popped out of the exhaust and the engine went off..another thing was when i turned on the ignition and when the dash lights were on i could hear some fan working under the bonnet which did not happen earlier..somewhere near the radiator..but it wasn't the big white fan behind the radiator..what do you guys think??

i think its the aux fan (the thermofan on front of the car) that turns on when i turn on the ignition..took it to autobahn today for a quick result coz the guy there also owns a Z but still they could not figure out..

check and clean your connections to the PTU and CAS and AFM. could also be that one of those units has failed. check to see if you have any ECU error codes.

    Yep, start there...

Your ECU sounds like it's in 'failsafe' mode. As Fleet said, check your connectors to and from PTU. could even be cracked wiring somewhere from the ECU.
So try cleaning these connectors, you could even check the actual ECU connector and wiring around it that it's not cracked/broken, then reset your ECU if you're able to and go from there.

Last time i had this same problem, it was a frayed wire in one of the pins from the PTU connector (ECU side). Fixed wire and all good again.

Tom had a look at it today and reckons that the coolant temp sensor and connectors are stuffed..he also reckons that the injector connectors and the PTU needs to be looked at..sounds like it..

    sounds like a good start.

Sounds like your temp sensor/wiring problem could be something extra, as the temp sensor info isn't the cause of your ECU running in failsafe mode. ie, 'check engine' light on and aux fan running when key is set on accessories. - this is usually caused from an electronic problem from your ecu usually through your PTU.

But it sounds like Tom is on this - aswell as your temp sensor/connector issue aswell. Hopefully it's something simple like a dodgey connection somewhere, as that's what it usually is. :zlove:

got the car back today..had to replace the ECU and the connector to the coolant temp sensor..Tom reckons the PTU is ok for now..this is costing me a fortune..being a student, studying overseas, doing a part time job, away from the family, uni work and maintaining a Z is way too hard..:mad::confused::confused:
