so my friends painting 3 cars this summer, and has an in for me on one of the days when the spraybooths empty.

My cars paint is starting to peel everywhere, so im considering a full respray.

Hell be helping me paint it, I jsut need to do all the prep myself. Hes painted about 5 or 6 cars, and for the minimal costs invovled im happy to have a go at it.

My carsalready burgundy, so to save redoing hte engine bay, insides, engine bay, headlights etc id be keen just to brighten it up a bit.

i.e. candy apple red as below :) my favourite zed out there.

It looks super bright and I lvoe it. My burgundy is starting to look super dull.

Doing a bit of research into kandy paints. House of Kolor has a few options. One is a transparent kandy over a base coat. The other is a kandy basecoat. Much simpler to spray for an amateur. As seen on this RX7.

I dont like how the rx7 isnt as bright as the 300 up there. Almost looks matte. Just wondering if anyone would know the difference? Is it likely that the zed has a clear transparent candy over a red basecoat or something, while the rx7 has the basecoat applies?

or the difference likely the amount of clearcoat layers applied?

Id be keen to use the basecoat mixed one. As it requires a lot less skill to apply. So it'd turn out like the rx7 i guess. But then put lots of clear on it to get it shining nicely.

Opinions? Also considering a bright blue in something easier to paint than candy. Just a basic 2-pak paint. Or third option is jsut plain black but thats kind of boring.

More clear coat doesn't equal more shiny, that's due to it being cut and polished. Im no expert, but the Z looks like its got some pearl through it.

That is a great color for the Zed, and i agree it looks like it's got pearl in it. But if your going to paint it, i'd go the the candy apple red, you can send a pic of your car too House of Kolor and i think for memory they photoshop different styles and colors so you can see what you like. Give them a ring can't hurt.

teh 2nd photo looks matt because of the studio or the way the photo has been taken.

dont attempt candy as a novice, ive said this before.

the zed in the top pic looks good because it has a 20 thousand dollar paint job on it.

IF you are doing a cheap beginner paint job then stick with a 2 pack, single stage paint job in the coulour of your choice, its much less work to stay close to your original colour.

If you choose to do a candy , any way you do it , it will look like sh1t, i can promise you that

Yep i agree with rollin, the guys who did my quote have said min 15 grand to do mine, engine out, full strip interior and thats for a Candy Apple Blood Red with a Silver Pearl thru the clearcoat.

agree... not go anywhere near this project if you dont know how paint works dude...

anything that isnt a solid colour needs clear.... only solid colours can be painted so they dont need clear..

As Scotty and rollin said before me. I agree. If your boy has only just done 5 or so resprays I wouldn't recommend tackling the candy job. No disrespect to your mate or you or anything but they arnt the easiest jobs to pull off. I've only had minimal experience with candys and I'm no expert or anything, and house of color very technical when it comes down to painting. You need to know what your doing. But if you want to take a chance and go with the candy apple, then before you do anything on the actual car, trial your paint and everything on some old panels and work out exactly what you want. Trust me, there's nothing worse than getting half way through a paint job and noticing it's not coming out how you want. And also, house of color, for the best result your best off using everything house of colour all the way down to primer. Their paint is made to work with it's own. Not some other brand. Though thats kind of the same with any paint system. Either way I wish you luck and I look forward to hear how the end result comes up

thanks for the input guys. so it is jsut the camera and lighting etc.

The thing is, after doing a bit of reading it says house of kolor has 2 options for the candy paint.

    1. Colour basecoat, candy over the top with clear.
Recommended application by a professional house of kolor specialist on their website.

    2. Shimrin Kandy Basecoats. Kandy mixed into the basecoat. Mimics a true kandy finish. Only need to clear it with an acrylic lacquer or urethane enamel.
    Recommended application-Standard Trade Skills

I figured the second option sounded feasible. I realise the first one isnt for a novice, mixing kandys and pearls into the clear etc. But the second sounded basic. Basecoats, clearcoat, done. The website made it sound like it was much easier than the other kandys.

Trust me if I could find a similar bright burgundy colour in 2pak or acrylic normal, I would hands down choose it. But im wanting to keep the car red, but stay away from a standard red, pick something a bit brighter. I might look into some red acrylics around, might get lucky :)

If you wanted to save a bit of cash paint wise, there are alot of really decent reds in other normal paint systems. Rather then Using house of colour. And they are just your basic colours found on everyday cars which are pretty staightfordward to paint (just basecoat and clear). Alot of newer colours also have some pretty crazy pearls in them already mixed into the paint. why not go see a local paint dealer and check out some colour swatches, even if you find a half decent one they might be able to tint the colour to be brighter/darker/or include more pearl to get what you want. I've made my own candy mimics at work just playing around and have come up with some really sweet looking colours :)

I'd honestly just go for a nice solid deep metallic red mate. A slightly retarded friend of mine just had his dodge charger done in candy apple red and the painter screwed it up, it's just shocking if it goes wrong.
