Hi guys, recently noticed a tap - tap -tap comming from my motor, it not a lifter sound or cam lobe as the tap tap time is different to the cam lobe rotation. and is more like a light ching ching sound

Its noticable down under the sump, its a ching ching ching, not loud, but enough to hear in the car, theres no knocking what so ever and engine runs smooth as allways?

its a 1994 N/A with 12thou on the clock, always serviced at 5000k and never reved over 5,500rpm approx.

Could it be a loose bearing cap???

And if this be the case could it be possible to examine and replace the bearing caps under the car with engine still in, i know motors verry well, and am after a second opinion as i dont want to start work in the wrong direction.

would rather pull off the sump if possible to carry out the work

    thanks for any input

I'm struggling with the statement that a 1994 NA would only have 12000 klms after 16-17years(and by all reports, has had two services in that span of time)and is now displaying big end bearing problems.(OK, now it's 120000klms, that sounds a bit more like it.:p:p).

Am I the only one who finds this difficult to accept?
In any case, you will need to pull the engine if you hope to remove the sump(either that or drop the front subframe).

Has your sump been dented ? . maybe someone jacked under it or another motor has been put in and the sump got dented ? so the crank is taping the sump. Or like you said the big end. Any way of puting it on you tube then posting a link for us to listen. One person saying it sounds like a ding could be anothers dong if you get what i mean.

What oil filter are you using? We tracked down a strange ticking noise from the bottem end to a cheap oil filter. Changed the filter and the noise went away.

I have a similar noise which i describe as a rattle rather than a knock on my 92TT auto. Engine had a full recondition 2000km ago. The noise wasn't there at initial startup but developed soon after. Initially I thought it was a lazy lifter but seems to be coming from the bottom end. The noise is only audible at idle and is louder when cold. It disappears when the engine comes off idle. Oil pressure hot is 20psi at idle and 57 at 3000rpm on 10/60 oil. Torque plate/torque converter bolts are tight.

i have the same by the sounds of it, only mines an n/a manual. it is more of a slight ching/rattle audible only at the sump. I might do the bottom end bearings anyway... i can hear it up top but doesent sound like a lifter, and if it was a stripped valve stem it wouldnt fire smoothly im guessing?

and the sound is only around idle to 3500rpm

Doesn't sound like bearing knock to me. How is your oil pressure. Pity to pull the engine out to replace big ends if you don't have to. Have you tried a stethoscope on the sump.

its definatly in the sump, its a light ching ching ching/mixed with a tick tick tick lol if it makes sence. its noticable up until 3,800rpm approx.i dont want to pull the ass off the motor if i dont have to lol but im unsure of the cause of this sound. it is also definatly not a knock as a usual big end issue. its a motor never been flogged and never reved over 5,000rpm since i bought the car yrs ago with genuine 70k on it at the time, it has 120k on it now and always well maintained :(

im scratchin my head lol, mabey an open up/inspection might be the go

Is the oil pressure within spec

I guess that rules out a loose oil suction pipe rattling against the sump. I can't offer any suggestions but would be very interested to find out what it is since I have a similar problem

Get a kero tin and put a 1/2 inch Af nut in it and shake slowly = big end noise!
Big end noise is louder under throttle opening power. Door knocker sound!
Main bearing noise comes in louder when you feather the throttle opening when under power.Muffled rumble knock noise!
Piston slap noise is a rattle clacking type sound when you open the throttle under no load.Cold 2 stroke lawn mower rattle sound!
Gudgen pin noise is a short knock noise is louder when motor is idalling or open the throttle slightly under no load.
A even tick+ tick noise is cam followers. A big fast noisy clock sound!

I know you said the noise is definately coming from the sump, but I did have a noise similar to what you are describing that turned out to be the aircon pulley bearing. You can easily test for this by removing the belt.

Check Starter/Ring Gear Clearance, sounds like starter bendix mechanism not retracting properly, this problem makes similar sounds to what you have described,
