i was looking at getting some cams for my tt and i know that if i got the 272* 9.5mm lift cams from UAS you need head spacers or something to fit them. So my question is if i got a 270* 8.8mm lift cam, what sort of stuff, if any, would need to be done to the heads to fit them?

this is the link i was looking at

and also would you still have VCT with aftermarket cams?

most after market cams eliminate VCT unless there regrinds

    WHY????
you can run vct with big cams ...

exactly, you only loose vct if you have non-oem variable cam gears.

    Here's the deal.

ALL new cams (be they JUN, UAS, Tomei, JWT...) that are ground on original billet are series 2. You cannot buy series 1 blanks full stop.

This means if you are retaining your factory series 1 intake cam gears you need to install a spacer so that your series 1 intake gears will fit to your series 2 cams.

Cams do not affect VCT (keeping it simple here guys...), your choice of intake cam sprocket does. If you change to an aftermarket solid adjustable intake cam sprocket then yes you lose VCT.

If you refit your OEM intake gears you do not lose VCT.

With the JWT R5's the heads do not require mods. They are 272* at 9.78mm lift. Yo only need to grind a small psection of the lifter well, pretty simple excerise with some other brands. Also avoid regrinds around that size as it messes with lifter preload and is a pita to get right. After alot of messing around, I have worked out how much preload is required but most places will have no idea.

It is possible that some aftermarket cams have no provision for the VTC return valve, this will elimate VTC operation.

In general all aftermarket intake cams I know of have this provision, but always ask before buying as there are alot of cam manufacturers out there.

Try to avoid loosing the VTC, it leaves a big hole in the bottom to midrange of the engine power delivery. Also dont forget the rest of the valve train when going to big cams.

It uses oil pressure to rotate the inside of the cam gear to retard intake timing at low rpm, there is a one way valve in the back off the cam that the solenoid pushes open when deactivated and allows oil to dump out of the cam, which causes the cam gear to return to its natural advancd state.

cool the actual part that rotates/moves the cam gear on the cam shaft ?

    Cheers

The inner part(where the cam goes) of the gear rotates inside the outer part(where the belt goes).

thanks a lot guys that was very helpful. with upgrading the rest of the valve train, you mean like heavy duty springs and the like? and you do need to run solid lifters right?

    cheers again, Andrew

Yes you will need to upgrade valve springs, your best bet is to buy a kit that includes cams and springs. No need for solid lifters if staying below 10mm lift.

The cams for solid lifters are different to those used with hydraulic lifters, you can't interchange them. With solid lifters a more agressive higher lift cam can be used, so if you are after maximum power and money is no object then consider solid lifters. Otherwise why bother?
