Drove the Zed yesterday for the first time since going to the Drags last week and as I was turning out of the garage the rear end started shaking and jolting and appears to have locked up solid. Drove in a straight line for a bit and it seems fine but turning is causing the back wheels to skip over the road. Not sure if its related to me abusing it or a problem with the way it was assembled when I had it pulled apart to fit the Leader Gears six months ago. I will call the diff shop who built it on Monday but until then does anyone know what might cause this to happen?

It could be faulty leader gears, or just to much abuse. It definately sounds like it's locked up for good by the way you describe it.

I would say the leader gears may be faulty for that to happen.

    same here

I have done the same thing the last time i was down there , about a month ago , i'm told it's something to do with overheating the limo clutch packs and kind off welding themselfs together i have been driving around and all i've noticed thats it nerves in the rear in windey stuff. If you drive in the wet be extra car
    eful

Method, i only have standard gears, some guys who race gtr in production racing tell me it's common for them

    Busted Diff.............

.....That's a bummer John:( What is your definition of "abuse" mate.:D Also regard to methods comments, it is a bit unfair I think to speculate on exactly what the fault was or what was broken and why, until the diff is stripped, and checked by those who know, hey?:) ;)

you're right but I haven't heard of this happening to many stock diffs, actually I haven't heard of it happening to any which is why I would say that it's the new gears. Although the installers may have stuffed something up. From what I have seen, stock Z diffs (TT) can handle a LOT of abuse and survive.

It cant be related to the Leader Gears themselves IMO as it drives fine in a straight line, its just the LSD part that is seized up. It is possible that the shop that fitted the Leader Gears might have done something wrong with the assembly of the LSD though. Also thought it might be related to the diff oil that they gave me to use, maybe it was not correct and its stuffed the LSD?

Abuse, as in burnouts at the Drags to warm the Slicks. I ran a 12.5 with a 1.6 60ft then drove home and the car was fine when I drove home (40km distance) but is now stuffed after sitting for 10 days.

I would say its soemthing to do with the LSD side of things if the gears themselves blew you would hear it continually like Ross mentioned however yours is just not slipping to allow for corners etc so sounds like the packs or whatever they use to control the LSD part. 15 year old parts are bound to fail eventually slightly abused or not.

John if the car is off the road for a while I will organise to get the radiator clamp so I can get some made for the GB.

    Cheers

Pulled the diff out this morning and dropped it off to the diff specialists. The guy reckons it will definately be the Viscous coupling has failed. I told the guy I had just taken it to the drags and he said that shouldn't harm it but circuit racing is what usually stuffs them as they heat up alot more. Waiting on a price from Coz for a new one or might get one of the quafe lsd's from the US which works like a detroit locker, locking solid under power out of corners and also at the drags.

    Re Quaiffe diff............

.....Hey John:) Randy Roth in the US is a Zedder and swears by the Richmond gears, he also has previously been able to get Quaiffe diffs at a discount. It may be worth while you talking to him.:) He drags and circuit races and pushes out 600rwhp. His email address is:- rroth@vitex.com

He knows Mark Leader real well, and, tell him also you have been talking to me. He would probably get a good deal going on a group buy.:) :) Or just a good discount for you. He asked me to organize a GB here as a distributor some time ago. but I just have not had time to get into it.;) Paul.
