hey everyone, ive decided to take my street 300zx off the road and rebuild it almost from the ground up as a track specific car. im hoping for some guidance and assistance along the way. If u had the money and could do the same, can i hear some opinions on what to get, what to do, what to avoid, what to watch out for etc etc??? i want the car to be built for handling, speed and power but most of all reliability, so im trying to spend the money on good parts where its needed. my first question is what turbos would be best suited? im thinking t28bb? thanx in advance for the advice. my price range is up to 20g. but im hoping to not go that far.

What class are you planning on running in? That will determine a lot of what you can and can't do.

at the moment im just building it to be a wkend toy so probably time attack for the moment and then decide from there

spend money on suspension and brakes first.. cant use decent power without them

+1 to this, seems to be the Brakes that most over look when going for big power, Upgrading the stock size rotors to drilled or slotted is not my idea of an upgrade, more of a freshen up.

ok what would u suggest? we are going to definitely put in proper brakes but just starting at the motor at the moment. im not expecting this to be done overnight so i would rather take the time and spend money where i should. ive already got coilovers in it. ill see how they go on the first outting before deciding if i need to upgrade.

Stripped the old wheels off it and sold them so im open to anything. Was thinking lightweight 18x9/10's

+2 to this, definately. Brakes are pretty straight forward but most people won't spend proper money on suspension which is the #1 priority in my book. MCA are the best in the business for that.

Engine? Nice 3000rpm power spread is what you want, 500whp will be plenty. With that much it's unlikely that a lack of power will be a problem as far as lap times go and the engine should be reliable too.

If you looking for fast lap times i would think the stock 16x8 would have been better than a set of heavy 18s ?

RedZedMikey RZM should now be DZM

He did say "was thinking lightweight 18x9/10's".
Enkei RPF1's for example, in 18x8.5 +30 weigh 8.3kg, and 18x10 +38 weigh 8.7kg. I think you'll find that is pretty close to OEM Z wheel weight.

    just to add to this

my 11's only weigh 8.75 kg but the extra weight comes from the bigger rubber that is used .

It becomes a compromise between weight and ...grip/traction which is needed with the more power you have and the better your suspension is .

Track cars are money pits, and I stress a no compromise approach will be crucial in helping yield results. :zlove:

First thoughts would be select wheels to suit a Big Brake Kit.
Most Z owners prefer a staggered setup, aim for 8.5-9" wide front and 10" wide wheels rear. SS brake lines.
17" wheels up front would allow StopTech Big Brake upgrade.
The Front Brakes do most of the work (So could retain stock rear brake calipers, whilst opting for new slotted rotors all round)
Best tyres you can afford. Something like Bridgestone RE11 are ideal for street/track work.
Suspension - Coilover type ~ Best you can afford / Powertrix perhaps.
Adjustable arms ~ Again the best you can afford!
HICAS Eliminator bar - Can rid engine bay and chasis of this redundent system/not really beneficial for track (HICAS countersteers for overtaking and is expensive to renew/heavy/problematic when aged/fails -so I'd recommend delete it.) Personally prefer exiting corners without this assist.
    ECU managment / Boost Controller
Full 3" Exhaust from DP throught to race mufflers.
    Probably 20g right there!

Turbo upgrades for serious track work should require engine rebuild / stronger internals.
Budget another 20g to finish Engine/mechanical upgrade and complete refresh inc clutch flywheel etc.

Dont forget safety gear too - Decent helmet, shoes and suit!

no offence to anyone on here. I love my zed and its a good fun all round car but for a track car wouldnt you be better of starting with an evo 8 or something??

I'd probably track a commadore before I tracked any mitsubishi, but that's just me personally...

I was involved in NZ rally, and would protest that Evos are freakin unreliable especially the 7 and 8!. The OEM parts for them are also overpriced too and difficult to obtain.

Rear wheel drive in more fun on the track anyhow. Cost differance unwarrented the Z32 still seems more sophisticated refined in some ways.
