Breaking down when cold

Firstly my apologies if this has been dealt with before. I did a search but couldn't find anything so here we go.
I recently purchased a 91 Manual TT that was not running but it appeared to be the Air Flow Meter and CAS that was the problem as it fired up after swapping these out. Two injectors where stuck (not operating) but a light tap with a drift freed them up and the engine is running on all 6.
The motor is not great (blows smoke at idle) but seems to pull well enough.
Trouble I have is that for the first 10-15 minutes of driving, irrespective of a prior warm up or not, the engine breaks down. Depress the clutch and the engine revs fine, let the clutch out and it stops. Put your foot down hard and it (sometimes) picks up, but of course that surging makes for difficulty driving in traffic.
Once it warms up (or whatever it is taking) it runs fine although it has a tendency to stall when you pull up at a set of lights in neutral unless you blip the throttle. Tried adjusting the Idle Air Control for that issue but that seems to be ineffective.
Have disconnected the C02 sensors with again no perceptible difference.
It has Blue Splitfire Coil packs and my son seems to think it may have aftermarket injectors but we have no history on the car at all.
Feel this is likely mechanically related not electrical as the issue goes away, so far every time.
Sorry for the saga but hope someone can point me in the right direction for a cure.

Got some coilpacks and plugs you can swap out with?

    Four (4) things -

    1. Check the ECU for fault codes.
    2. Pull the spark plugs.
    3. Compression test the engine (when it is at operating temperature).
    4. Report back with the results.

Whats the PTS voltage, should be .45V. I would suggest the engine has not been run for a lengthy period for some time. Replace the spark plugs, set the gaps and give it a good long run. I bet that 95% of your problems vanish.

  5. Anti

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

You know your injectors are ****y, clean them...

    Thanks for the help.
As an update I swapped out the ECU with one I was running in my track Z with Nistune, loaded a base map.
    No error codes.
I didn't mention I fitted new plugs when I first got the car.
Anyway went for a short run after swapping over the ECU, the engine had warmed up completely due to mucking around trying different things as you do and Viola, no break down, pulls a little better. Still stalls at intersections so will clean out the IAC but am now leaning towards Martins suggestion and intend taking it for a decent thrash down the valley to Murwillumbah tomorrow.
    Cheers guys much appreciated.
