Hey all i just installed a set of RDA slotted rotors all round and bendix ultimates (thanks Caz), just a question i went for a hard run last night and there was smoke coming from them, is this from the rust protective film they put on the rotors or what... i will be honest i didnt wipe the rotors down before i put them on i just plane old forgot to. Any help would be great.

    Cheers
    Danny:biggrin:

    Re : Brakes smoking......

From memory, those rotors come coated in oil (probably to prevent rust while sitting in warehouse) so it's no surprise they were smoking

I would not be concerned about the rotors because the oil will burn off eventually BUT I think you'll find you've just screwed your brake pads.

Oil and brake pads do not go well together

What is it with men and instructions!! Sheeesh!

Your lucky they pulled you up Danny! :bash: :bash: :bash:

The rotors are covered in a protectant film and there are instructions in every box stressing the importance of cleaning this off prior to fitting. I hope you haven't screwed your new pads .....is she still pulling up OK?

If your pads are in trouble, just take them out and rub them with some 60 grit dry sandpaper until they are clean.

would the slots in the rotors be enough to clean the pad surface as you brake?

If they've absorbed some oil you might need to sand the top off. Rotors would probably take too long as well as the fact that you would have poor braking until then.

slotted rotors and bendix smoke anyway, when ever we go for a hard run in the mountains, they always smoke,8 of us went a few months ago, when we all pulled up,it was like a bushfire
as far as not rubbing the oil off, well ill say no more on that  :bash: ,you also may want to bed them in before going for a hard drive, its going to take a little while until they work properly ;)

Also make sure you break in the rotor properly to avoid heat spots and warping it. There's a tech guide somewhere that was very comprehensive but I can't seem to find it.

probably the best bet is to remove the rotor's and give them a good spray of brake cleaner/degreaser to be sure its all gone,it may seem like it has gone, but it will be in all the vents now and will come out again as soon as they are heated

If the rotors were the gold anodised ones then they probably didnt have oil on them (did they have left and right stickers on them?, cant put stickers on an oily surface). Brake pads will smoke and will eventually catch fire if you push them hard.
