I wanted to share my receint brake upgrade with those members who like me, have been running with somewhat dangerous brakes on their Z's. I wasn't aware how spongy and unresponsive they were, so it was time to upgrade!

So far I'm very happy with the improvements to the stopping power of my beast and I think by completing the project myself, I saved a few hours labour at $100+ p/h at the local "brake specialist"

    Fronts:
Picked up a set of DBA 4000 series kangaroo paw style slotted rotors off a fellow member for $250

    Shim kit $40

Remsa Brake pads $90 from GSL Rallysport

Painted the calipers with VHT caliper paint silver with black lettering, $13 a can from repco.

    THE NEW:

    Rears:
RDA908S slotted rear rotors $190 from GSL Rallysport, painted the hats with VHT caliper paint $13 repco.

Remsa Brake pads $80 from GSL Rallysport

    Fluid:
Bottle of Penrite super dot 4 $10
TRW GP600 Dot 4 Racing Brake Fluid 1L $65 for any future track days.

    The final result!

    Rotors on wrong side !!!!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you have your rotors on the wrong sides

Ah crap! So your saying the slots should be reversed? Somewhere I read they are unidirectional so I never considered which way the slots were facing. What problems am I going to face with the current setup? Cooling or rotor face issues?

main thing is the cooling vanes are straight, everything else doesn't really matter.

which way the slots varies depending on maker. don't worry about it.

i have DBA5000's with the kangaroo vanes, it says that they are uni directional so it doesn't matter which side of the car you put them on.

Hat to be the bearer of bad tidings - but your wrong.

Kangaroo style vanes don't have a direction, can stick them on anyway he pleases.

Slots are really only there to stop pad glazing, they do that whichever direction they are in.

    Incorrect.....

They ARE on the wrong sides !

The 'kangaroo paw' cooling vanes are non directional but the slots ARE directional. The slots are meant to allow the easy expulsion of brake dust and gases towards the outer edge of the rotor.

If the slot direction was not significant the manufacturer would not go to the increased complexity and expense of making two different rotors

Out of the box they come with 'L' & 'R' stickers attached.

    Absolutely correct!!

Proper evacuation of powdered Brake Pad material is dependant on "Centrifugal Force" directing the powdered lining material away from the pad/disc surface. This is achieved by angling the slot so as to get maximum egress towards the outer edge of the disc.
With the slots angled as they are in this example, they are effectively "scooping" that Brake dust back in toward the centre.
This is counteracted by the Centrifugal Force, and so, the Brake dust will stay on the disc surface until scraped-off by the Brake Pad.
Negating the original intention of having the slots.

    Not sold.

At the speed the rotors are turning the slots could be designed like lightening bolts, as soon as the pads are off the gasses will evacuate.

Slots are primarily for deglazing of pads.

My two peice Stoptech rotors which are slotted came with stickers as to left and right (which was determined by the cooling veins) and the slots face FORWARDS.

I asked the fellow at the time any difference with the slots and he told me absoloutley none though make sure you put them on as intended as they are a left and right rotor - again based on the cooling veins.

It's either or. As discussed numerous times before. Only definitive answer to which way the discs need to be mounted is via the instructions printed by the manufacturer.

All claims have merit, as it has been a proven fact/scientific fact for each brake disc used by many different members. Hence the variety of claims made.

For the OP's benefit it's best talking to dba to find out which way the kangaroo paw discs need to be mounted. And also talk to Greg to see which way the Rda discs need mounting.

Let it be left there guys. Don't turn this thread into a bitch fight.

Well I've purchased both the 4000 & 5000 DBA rotors and also the 2 piece Stoptechs from new...

If you look at the instructions, or even the DBA website/ install photos/video guide you'll notice the correct direction of the wiper slots
(So, you currently have them reversed, although I dont see how the DBA direction design effects the venting)

But yeah the Stoptech have the slots forward, whereas the DBA have indicated in all instances Ive seen to face the slots backwards.

Stoptech rotors have the circumferance vanes venting in the traditional anti-clockwise which translate to being crucial as the direction of venting is reliant on forward rotation, whereas DBAS do not, and rely on a unique "Kangaroo" pattern for venting/cooling (seemingly irregardless of directional motion?).

Nah, didn't ban anyone. Sign of weakness.

Ketterz: Tell me about the Remsa pads, I've got QFM A1RM pads from GSL on my car at the moment but now that I don't track it any more the next pads will be a bit more street friendly (find the A1RMs a bit noisy under gentle braking).

I painted my callipers silver too... but i think it is too light a colour for the callipers and the brake dust has eventually stained them. therefore i wouldn't recommend painting callipers silver, and next time i'll be painting them red. silver looks good for a while, but trust me, the brake dust will stain them eventually unfortunately. just a heads up ;)

We have the indisputable ability to turn any thread into a bitch fight(and yet we still insist on proving our innate skills in that area).;)

As one who has DBA "Kangaroo Paw" slotted front discs(and RDA slotted rears) I can affirm that the proper fitment for BOTH is with the slots angled backward away from the direction of travel. This is largely to ensure that the residual dust from the Brake Pads DOES NOT clog the slots thereby reducing their effective bleeding-off of the gases produced during heavy braking. :br:

    Those rotors

came from me, and there is a right and left side, take them of and swap them over, says in the dba fitting instructions to get that right.

Aren't they similar to the HPX's, that was my understanding anyway. So decent street pad. I'm running the hpx's now & pretty happy but I'm running 310mm gtt fronts, possibly dont stock them now for z32?

    Nice write up OP.

Well thus far having the remsa pads on the incorrect rotor have been great, they are quiet and the stopping feel just gives me confidence in the system. However I must state that previous to this setup I had 20yr old rotors and fluid which hadn't been bled for 4+ years. I talked to Greg from GSL Rally and he got me onto a good thing with the Remsa pads for 90% + street use. Ill get onto swapping the rotors in a fortnight when im back from work, I will make sure to look out for this L & R indicators as I saw nothing previously.

As for the silver colour, I really like how the AMG calipers look on the Mercs these days so I wanted to imitate that, my brother painted his yellow and withinin a week they looked bad. I think with the Remsa pads it will reduce the amount of dust which could cover the calipers.
