what do you think about a couple of scoops on the bonnet then vents in the wheel well and then on the guard i quess it will detract from the z look could be a way of cooling engine bay.
I was thinking this same thing. Seems an easy way of letting some airflow into the engine bay, surely this is a sensible mod considering the electricals and pipes seem to suffer from the heat? With the BORDER style bonnets do they work considering the vent isn't facing into the wind?
My main concern with that idea.......>> Is that the increase of airflow at speed would effect the amount of air drawn through the radiator. Just about all zed bonnets I have seen have rear facing vents to aid in drawing air through the front of the car and then allowing to vent.
you want them rear facing to extract the air out of the engine bay. Here's the legalities of bonnet scoops: Bonnet Scoops Bonnet scoops/projections may be fitted to any vehicle provided the driver's vision is not restricted under normal operating conditions with the driver's seat located at its lowest and rearmost position. 12 Bonnet-mounted scoops/projections must meet the following requirements: * When a 165mm diameter sphere is placed on the bonnet in front of the scoop (or bonnet projection) and rolled backwards until it touches the scoop, no forward point of the scoop or point of contact between the sphere and the scoop must lie above a horizontal plane passing through the centre of the sphere. * It shall be possible to see either the surface of the road 11 metres in front of the driver's eye or all of the front edge of the original body when looking across the top of the bonnet scoop. For the purposes of this requirement, the driver's "eye" position can be taken as being a point 730mm above and 270mm forward of the junction of the seat cushion and seat back with the seat in its lowest and rearmost position. * The edges at the front of a scoop/projection shall be rounded with a minimum of 10mm radius. * All other edges and corners shall have a radius of not less than 5mm and be designed to reduce the risk of bodily injury to any person to a minimum. * The scoop/projections must not have reflective surfaces. * Any holes in the bonnet must not substantially reduce the strength or impact resistance of the bonnet. * Air cleaners or carburettors must not protrude beyond the original bonnet profile unless the bonnet scoop/ projection is manufactured from equivalent gauge mild steel, compared with that of the original bonnet.
This is absolutely the best!!! another thing is aerodynamics!! how much of an effect do you think it will have. sounds like the trip down south went really good. i was thinking of putting the scoops forward and venting the wheel well and then vents on the guards causing the vacuum effect. this would not be as good as has been suggested because im trying to move warm air down,i didnt't sketch that i know i had a bit of trouble getting the sketch to size, im not the sharpest tool in the shed im afraid.
the actual cooling system itself as built into the system is the most effective way of getting rid of heat, and so keeping it in tip top condition would be the best way of keeping ur engine bay "cool". funny thing is though, my mate had a hole in his bonnet cut out and a fine grill placed in the opening to help vent air from his Cordia l0l engine bay. The air coming out of it was really warm, suggesting that a scoop or opening in the bonnet also gets rid of quite alot of heat, i suppose it would be especialy useful if u could take advantage of convection and suck from under the motor past the motor through the opening in the bonnet. No chance of that happening inthe zed engine bay, i guess.
Vent panel I am currently makinf a replacement panel for tthe plastic vent panel benhind the bonnet. The standard panel actually seals against the bonnet. I am making carbon fibre finish panel that will also allow hot air to escape the engine bay. The hot air exists and joins airflow over the windscreen.
umm i was just wondering if bonnet scoops let bugs, kamikaze birds and rain into the engine bay? wouldn't the guts/water and heat/cool combo be bad for the rubber hoses? yeh them border style guards and bonnet look pretty sweeeeet!
Has anyone got some pics of a good scoop and vent? I really want both but have seen some generic vents that don't sit flush on the bonnet and they look shite! Cheers Geoff
That seal at the back of the bonnet.....>> Is there by law, don't complain if you get a yellow sticker for removing it. The air drawn into the cabin for heating/cooling is drawn through that gril, so also don't complain if you start getting bad oil/fuel smells once you modify the panel.
Geoff, see if you can find some recent pics of RedZedMikey's fibreglass bonnet. It has one major and two satellite scoops, rear facing, and it looks great (more so since he put mesh in the openings.
The bonnet has been on the car for nearly a year and yes water does get in with heavy rain. Light rain is OK, not enough builds up to break surface tension on the lip. Hasn't been an issue so far as the car is driven daily so water does not sit for extended periods of time. I don't take it to car washes and we can't wash cars with a hose (restrictions) so that hasn't been an issue. With a bucket and sponge by hand, you tend to be more careful.
with some alloy sheeting and a lot of hours you could modify your existing bonnet to replicate the Border style bonnet. At least that is my intentions to try and keep costs down.
