G'day Kyle - does it smell sweet like coolant and does it go away after the car warms up?

At first I thought it might have just been condensation in the exhausts, but it could be your turbo seals starting to go.. Another tech day? :zlove:

Does your exhaust have a H pipe or some call it a balance pipe ?. Check that first and if not get one fitted for stuff all at a exhaust place to see if it fixes it. The pipe i'm talking about usually is in front of the diff and goes between the two exhaust to balance exhaust pressure. If it's an after market exhaust chances are it hasn't been fitted and some how ( don't ask me how ) it effects that mojo ( harmonics ) of the exhaust gas pulses and cause that type of smoke. Mine was like it when i bought it and was told i had turbo problems but putting a H pipe in fixed it so worth a try. When mine did it every now and then it stunk.
    Good luck Dave

It does look a bit excessive.

If the car is only being used on short runs you can get a build up of condensation in the exhaust.

Is your radiator water level going down ?

If it is not, and your oil looks good, I would take it for a really good run keeping an eye on the vitals and dry it out.

And maybe be careful with the hose when you wash it. :p

Hey martin, yeah smells sweet, maybe it is coolant :(

I have a joined x-pipe, so basically a h pipe. They are not straight through.

I topped it up recently and it seems to have gone down a little bit...

My question is, can I still drive the car while its doing this, or am I damaging the turbos, exhaust, cats etc? It may take me a while but if I'm going to replace the seals and take the engine out it seems like I should just replace the turbos and do as much as I can while that bad boy is outta there?

    Hi mate,

I recently had this exact problem with mine, thought valve stem seals, turbo seals etc,I am no whizz with these things.but i found my thermo not working,I think the motor went into a protection mode because of it I am just organising now a consult prog/cable now to check it.I just cleaned the electric terminals and ran a jumper to the thermos to make sure the thermos were actualy in good condition ,with the air con on and the motor at working temp they burst back to life and my smoke has dissapeared 3weeks now ..its a cheap fix maybe you suffer a similar dilemer

By thermos do you mean thermostat? I just replaced it in 100k service and was doing it a bit before 100k service as well.

I recently did a compression test on the engine, all cylinders between 155-165 except for number 6 which was 130. Dropped some oil in there and shot up to 170. So low compression on one cylinder... but I don't think its related though?

Number 6 Cylinder is the one that suffers most from overheating and running lean. It is not unusual for that cylinder to be showing low compression as a result.
It would be advisable to plan for a rebuild sometime in the not too distant future.
