Big End Bearing?

OK this is the sound my Zed is making, sounds like a big end bearing:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpet-lIvLcw&feature=youtu.be

Its fairly loud so those with headphones, turn the volume down a little. The car powers fine, runs fine, boosts fine (Boosted to 14PSI). It DID blow the dipstick out once but hasnt done it since. Thought it might have been a sticking lifter but the noise appears to have gotten louder and disconnecting the coilpack for cylinder 1 makes the noise go away.

It's more apparent in the second part of the video after I plug the coil pack back in - compare the before and after sound, the metallic knock is quite obvious.

    Any thoughts/opinions?

ooow that is a good one. Have you drained the oil and checked for metal?
Is the oil pressure lower than normal? These are both supporting indicators of big end issues.

Its hard to tell on the video . Could be a stuck lifter ?

Goes away when you unplug the coil pack - lifter wouldn't do that as far as I'm aware.

    Oil pressure is fine.

Not yet as it was the middle of the night, about to head to the Zed Shed and get it looked at.

Hope you make it without an issue.

From when I've spun a bearing, didn't really sound like that, and noise didn't go away with disconnected pots. Unfortunately, the alternatives are not really much better, especially with a dipstick blowing out.

Have you pulled the plug on the offending cylinder? See if it offers any signs to a cylinder specific issue, rather than a bearing issue.

If the dipstick blew out would suggest sump is pressurising . Does that mean compression rings are not doing there job and letting pressure through to the sump ?

Can, can also be PCV related.

I THINK mine is PCV related, hence why Im getting a compression test this arvo....have to wait until mechanic has time though as I cant for the life of me find MY compression tester >.>

Pulled 3 coilpacks and plugs and compared, all looked the same, swapped them all around to different cylinders, no difference. No oil in the intake either.

OK Compression is fine, looks like it's a dead lifter. Ive been running diesel oil through it to clean them out a bit, just did an oil change with new regular oil and the sound is barely audible now.

Edit: Nothing in the oil either.

Good out come. What diesel oil did you run out of curiosity?

That is the exact noise a motor with high tension leads will make if one of the leads has slipped of the end of the plug. And by you saying that it goes away when you disconnect the coil sure sounds like it is coil / spark plug related. Do you have the little spring and carbon piece in the end of that coil ?. Also try swaping the coil and plug to another cylinder.
    Cheers Dave

Yeah swapped a bunch around and no change, oil was Shell Rimula 15W40

This is a similar sound to what mine was making ( I had 2 sounds) and I was just about to say lifters .

Use a proper oil flush, higher detergent content than deisel oil. It will take 3-4 oil changes of deisel oil to get the same job as a good flush will do. Nulan have a decent one called detox or something that I have used to successfully unseize lifters in zeds.

after the flush and a new LIGHT oil the noise should go away, this will tell you that it was oil deposit related and the lifter itself isn't ****ed. It will possibly come back, as more dislodged shit clogs that bastard up again, just rinse and repeat. Easier than taking the head off and replacing them @$750 for a set of new lifters.

A good flush will also very quickly dislodge large chunks of gunk in one big hit which could very well block an oil passage, starve a cylinder and throw a rod or something else. Search the forums, oil flush is bad.

Thats the point of using the diesel oil, slowly cleans it and breaks down gunk in manageable bits the filter can cope with. Plus with the amount of kms a week I do it really wouldn't take THAT long.
