Battery Warning Light

    Hi all,

So driving home tonight I noticed that the battery warning light on the dash was on. This faded the more the engine was working, so at full acceleration there was no light, but when crusing the light was there and faded at mid acceleration etc.

Does this mean that there is a problem with charge? It still started fine, battery is less than 6 months old and has never drained fully, so easy life.

I had a power steering leak over summer and memory is telling me than power steering leaks can kill the alternators as they are in the same area but couldn't find this searching? Is this correct or is my memory playing funny buggers?

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

    TT 2+2 manual

    cheers guys
    Liam

Your alternator is starting to go...

higher engine revs is giving higher charge rate hence light goes off, but you're not getting any charge at cruising rpm.

Give the alternator a good degreasing, let it dry, and see if the problem persists.

    Thanks

    Will give that a go

You will more than likely discover that the P/S Fluid has leaked into the Voltage Regulator circuit of the Alternator and "fried" it.
I had the same problem some while ago(fortunately my local AutoLec was able to repair it).
This whole problem would have not existed if only the Alternator was ABOVE the P/S Pump(there is an infinitesimal chance of electrical current dribbling down into the P/S Pump).:p:p:rofl::br:

Check battery volts with a multimeter

when idling and at 2500+ RPM. If you see anything below 9V or above 15ish, the voltage reg in the alt is dead. If over-volting, you can do damage to electrical components so be careful. As others have said, power steer fluid leaks are the common cause. Must also fix this or the same prob will happen to the replacement alt.

Well didn't survive the weekend :(

Yes power steering leaks were fixed in the summer, so delayed failure. Managed to get a rebuilt alt this afternoon and everything is up and running again.
