    Hi All,

    Had a compression test done on my car today and got the following;
    PS. 91' TT

    No1. 100
    No2. 80
    No3. 150
    No4. 95
    No5. 150
    No6. 135

So ahh... that's not good. I have noticed she hasn't felt too happy this year and finally got around to having the test done. The car has felt really rough lately and I had actually stopped driving it the last month or two.

So i guess my question is.. Why?
I'm trying to figure out if i keep it, sell it, rebuild, new engine?
really not the news i wanted but it's the cards I've been dealt. I remember seeing a write up some where saying, if you get readings like "this", then it's most likely this causing it. Sort of a troubleshoot once you've done the test. So i will have a look tomorrow some time for it.

But in the meantime can someone give me advise or options?

    Thanks in advance.

    Why?
Could have something to do with how it's been maintained & looked after in its 23 years on the road.
    In short it has expired.
    Dollar$ will determine its future.

Replace engine or is it possible to fix?
If not I have to sell up shop

Anything can be fixed, it's a matter of how much it will cost to fix.
If that's your yellow Z, use it as an example.
If it's in very poor condition it could be worth 2 to 3K.
If it's in excellent condition with expensive extras it could be worth 10 or 12K.
If an engine rebuild is going to cost you 10K, would you spend it?
The value of both examples will not increase by 10K, they may increase by 1 or 2K if your lucky.
So would you spend 10K on a rebuild, buy another Z for 5 or 6K, or a good used engine for 1.5K?
Finding a good used engine will probably be hard.

    Egg ....

    Did they tell you...

...if it was rings/bore, or the valves?
Did they say, we squirted a little oil in and the numbers came up?
Are you blowing smoke and using lots of oil?

I think you might be surprised how much longer you can continue to drive around with bad compression, I've seen worse figures and the car kept going for a couple of years daily use.

Perhaps ignore the compression for now and save for a rebuild.
That would be my advise, don't stress too much and try and save enough for a rebuild in 12 months or so.

    Good luck.

I don't think they did to be honest. It's starting to drop more smoke when I give it the boot. As in... it never use to but it did the other day.

I had been nursing it a lot lately though. I'm not losing any oil.

I might have to redo the test and do the oil thing and stuff.

    Your car looks good.
You say you love it. Looks that way.

What did you do to her earlier this year?
    Timing belt? Adjusted timing ?
Could it be a vavle problem?

Honestly i do, i had so many more plans (eventually depending on cash) but i can't afford a engine swap or anything major to be honest.

It had it's 200k service last year. Otherwise I've just been servicing regularly and that's it..
Hasn't actually been driven too much this year because of a work vehicle.
the only performance addition it a EBC which could be the reason behind it giving up lately but i rarely use it. Only gets turned on when there's competition or I'm just purely bored haha

I have stopped using it completely now though because it's been rough.

id be on the hunt for a replacemnt second hand tt engine if were you.

its a nice car particurly with the fresh respray etc etc, be a shame to see it parted out of sent to the scrap yard.

second hand motor will set you back about 1-2k depending, and we a can organise a tech day or similar to get it all swapped over.

Thanks mate, it's just i don't have the 1-2k to get the new engine. And i need my car because i may not have a company one next year.

So either I sell it and hopefully don't take too much of a hit considering how much I've spent on it. Or pray for a miracle.
I'll keep an eye out for an engine anyway just in case.

I also just payed to have my spoiler removed, patched and painted + the 3rd brake light haha. ~$700
Looking so clean I'm going to cry if i sell it.

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

Find a tested replacement engine, host a tech day then nut up and change it. You'll be alright.
