Car is making a horrible noise on decelleration. Sounds like it is coming from the drivers side turbo region. The first sound clip is from above the engine at idle and sounds fine to me. The second sound clip is from below the drivers side turbo. The sound can be heard on decelleration. It's not quite right, but you can get the idea. Sound at idle Sound from idle to 3000 then idle
Sounds a bit like a blowen exhaust gasket some where. When I blew my Manifold to turbo gasket it sounded a bit like that. as the hole gets bigger it will get louder. And you only heard it when you gave it some gas, at idle it sounded fine. Mine was a lot louder than that, and when I took the manifold off with the turbo, there was a huge chunk of the gasket missing.
yeh sorry - right click save as works for me they're just little mp3s i encoded off the wav file from the video i took
longer clip of noise this one is a much bigger file which i was trying to avoid (keep the field of possible diagnosis open to dial-uppers). It is taken from cold start, from differing points around the car. It starts under the drivers side turbo and then goes to above the engine bay and then back under the drivers side turbo. The noise is a little more evident when it's completely cold and usually doesn't show up much at all at idle but I didn't want to run it too long in case it's dying. longer clip of noise bloody hell i'm having issues trying to get hosting. i'll have to fix the link later
It definitely sounds like a leaking gasket Sam My guess would be the gasket between the head and the manifold. I say this because the gaskets between turbo and manifold and turbo and dump pipe are both metal and are probably a lot stronger. (I've been wrong before though) Cliff
I blew my manifold to turbo gasket cant be that strong. hehe. never the less. Shame its the drivers side, i had mine go on the passenger and I was able to pull the manifold off with the turbo, as for the drivers side.. I would hate to try.
mm that doesn't sound good at all So this pretty much means engine out correct? Oh dear that is not going to be a fun exercise. Is there any chance it could be a leak at the dump pipe to down pipe join, because I know I'm missing a bolt (snapped the first time I had the gearbox out) that holds that join together. The cost of an engine pull is too great to get it done by someone else so I'm looking at purchasing an engine crane. I want to do it on quite a tight budget so what would be a minimum of things that should be done with the engine out? All 100k service items, under plenum hosing (which was eliminated), knock sensor (in stock location), heater hoses etc were done around 10,000 kays ago so most of that should be ship shape. Obviously it would be a good plan to have a leakdown and compression test before I take it out to make sure it's worth putting it back in. Also should I have a turbo specialist look over the turbos while they're out to ensure they're not about to cark it? Car has done just over 130,000 Kays.
it has gotten louder since i first heard it so maybe this supports your idea. before it was heaps quiet (like not a worry at all) and then it grew in intensity to where it is now which is quite a bit louder.
