OK so I finally had time to figure out the wiring to make this work, figure out how the factory mirror switch works, and replace the fuses and relays I blew when I accidently wired the 12v to ground because I mixed up which pin on the plug was which >.>

It's only wired in using terminal blocks and dodginess atm because it was only a trial run but will be wired in properly shortly.

The mod is based off this mod here for a Nissan Silvia: http://www.silviawa.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47083.

The problem with that mod is it leaves the sheared off switch useless, sitting there doing nothing and I HATE having non functioning parts. Also it leaves no possibility to fold them out with the car off unless you turn the car on then disconnect the battery with them out (Making washing them fun >.>). It also means should you want to fold them in when it's on, no dice.

Basically, I've taken this idea, and with some extra relays expanded on it to incorporate the factory switch as an override.

Switch up = mirrors always out, switch down = mirrors always in, switch in the middle doing nothing = automatic mirrors (In when car is off, out when car is on).

Here is the diagram of the wiring for the relays to make this work (The bit in the top left corner is just showing which pin is which between the 10A and the smaller 3A relays):

The pins on the switch itself are labelled as if you turn the switch over and look at the pins. The ground pin is the middle pin in the middle of the plug, the mirrors out and mirrors in pins are the ones on the outer edge of the plug directly beneath the switch itself and the other one is the acc 12v pin.

Here is a (very crappy) youtube video of it in action:

To do this mod yourself you need:
    3xDPDT 12v Relays
    1xSPST or 1xSPDT 12v Relay
    Blade Fuse Holder
    10A Blade Fuse
    Wires, heatshrink, solder etc

Start with the mirrors folded in then disconnect the battery.

    1) Wire the relays to each other as per the diagram above.

    2) All common pins should be wired together (All ground pins connected, all constant 12v pins connected, all acc 12v connected).

    3) Cut the following wires off the power mirror switch leaving enough wire to use:

*Green/Black Stripe wire under the switch
*Green/Red Stripe wire under the switch
*Blue/White Stripe wire under the switch
*Black ground wire (Middle of switch assembly - Optional)

    4) Connect the ground pins to a good earth or alternatively splice it into the existing ground wire for the switch itself (Black wire)

    5) Connect the acc/ignition 12v pins to the Blue/White wire on the loom.

    6) Connect the constant 12v pins to the fuse holder with a 10A fuse in it and then connect that to a constant 12v power source (I used the stereo one which is fused at 15A so a mirror short should blow the wired in fuse but leave the stereo running)

    7) Connect pin 3 from the SPDT/SPST relay to the Blue/White stripe wire on the plug.***

    8) Connect the ground pin from Relay 2 to the Green/Black Stripe wire on the plug.

    9) Connect the ground pin from Relay 3 to the Green/Red Stripe wire on the plug.

    10) Connect pin 5 from Relay 1 to the Green/Red Stripe wire on the loom.

    11) Connect pin 6 from Relay 1 to the Green/Black Stripe wire on the loom.

If done correctly you should now have automatic mirrors and manual override.

Note: If the mirrors do the opposite to what you expect (Mirrors out when car is off/mirrors in when car is on) then you mixed up the wires from Relay 1 to the loom. Just switch the Green/Red and Green/Wires around from the loom and it should fix it.

If the switch does the opposite (Switch up folds mirrors in/switch down folds mirrors out) then you mixed up the same wires but on the plug side. Same deal, switch the wires around it should work fine. Or just leave it because it will still work perfectly, just the switch will work opposite.

***The reason I use the SPST/SPDT relay in place of the acc 12v wire is because some of the relays connect constant 12v to this wire when the car is off, which is fine when the switch is doing nothing but if the switch is flipped it feeds constant 12v down the accessories circuit and turns all the accessories on - this way the relay activates off the switch's original factory circuit and provides the voltage to the switch from the constant 12v and acts as seperate acc circuit to isolate the 2 from each other. This is also important because it ensures the mirror angle adjustments continue to work as per normal after the mod.

    Great write up. Well done.

I have always liked the idea of an in/out/auto function. kind of seems like that was how they planned it from the start given the switch configuration.

Can you expand this idea further for auto closing windows?

You could just wire a spdt relay powered by the accessories circuit that holds the circuit normal when the car is on, but flips the relay off and closes the mirror up circuit when the car is off. You'd have to manually open them again though.

If you wanted it to work with the override like the mirrors then its the exact same circuit just find the 12v acc, ground, windows up and windows down wire on the window switch and wire it up the exact same.

But that way you couldn't half wind the windows.
