Auto Tranny problem

    Hello all. I have a 1989 300ZX TT 2+2 auto.
It's done 142,000 Klms on the speedy though the engine was replaced with a reconditioned one 2,000 Klms ago.
The other day I was driving and put the switch into Power to overtake which I did but after that I've lost all gears above 2nd.
I've run the error code check and it said that things were normal.
Are there any threads that have dealt with this problem before?
If not are there any other simple ways or checks I can make to try and ascertain the fault?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers.

You mean the auto diagnostic test yeah? It sounds kinda like "limp home" mode, but that's almost always triggered by a sensor that should show up in the diagnostic test. Are those two gears that are working behaving normally, or do they have reduced power as well?

Also, it isn't in hold mode with a blown bulb in the dashboard?

    Yes the diagnostic check.
The remaining gears seem to be working properly with plenty of power when I gun it. It easily goes to 5K revs before I ease off again but will not go up the gears. I have tried the hold/auto/power switch on all settings but no joy.
The manual indicates I should first check the inhibitor switch and then the control linkage, so when the rain clears up I'll check those out. Just hoping it isn't the shift solenoids.
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers.

I don't think it will be the solenoids, as they should all show up in the diagnostics and if the inhibitor switch failed you'd probably only have first gear.

Also dunno about control linkage. If you can feel it change gears when you move the stick, it's probably fine. Especially if you can go into reverse then forward again etc.

The fact it happened straight after using power mode makes me think that button is somehow to blame. Maybe the button you change it with somehow got stuck in hold mode. This is the only thing I can think of that wouldn't bring up errors, would allow full power in 1st and 2nd but wouldn't let you change up to third.

Good thinking. I'll pull the switch out and check it. Thanks for that. I reckon you're right about the solenoids too, I hope so anyway.
Thanks again. I'll let you know how I go.
    Cheers.
