Your confusing study methods... a retrospective cohort doesnt involve a control group. Its a group of all the same that you then look back on the history of. Your thinking of a randomised controlled trial. A controlled trial is a better level of evidence than a cohort study for the reasons you mentioned. The ultimate level of evidence being a double blinded randomised controlled trial so there is no bias in the formation of the results.If you did a study like this then all the variables you mentioned get taken into account through the randomising into study group and control group. With enough numbers in the study to give it statistical power, by randomising the groups you negate all these random factors you cant account for by presuming with enough numbers they will balance each other out.The trouble with doing this sort of trial is it would be almost impossible to create in this sort of setting. So we are left with the next best thing, a retrospective cohort. You take everyone with the UDP and look at adverse events involved. With the number of pulleys fitted you get very good statistical evidence of it being a safe mod. Which also means for it to be an unsafe mod, or cause damage to the motor that was statistically significant you would need more than the ONE example that ZX299 has given us and bases all his faith on. There is a reason it lacks statistical significance being only a single event. It could be caused by anything other than the pulley and you cant tell. With such a huge amount of pulleys fitted with no problems you cant lend weight to a single failure.

My apologies Doug.... Your right discussions like this are better off the forum. No excuses but an explanation maybe.The main purpose of the forum is to help those that dont know about the car, learn something. I dont want someone new to the site reading the initial thread going away thinking that the UR pulley is a bad mod and will ruin his engine. It is a cheap, effective mod with easy gains in power. ZX299 has it in his heart that these will damage your engine, when clearly they dont. I wanted to demonstrate the science behind proving something rather than just saying "take my word for it" so people can understand and have confidence that Im not talking from my arse but from common sense. Unfortunately poor old Lloyd feels threatened by this. In his own words "As far as Nathan is concerned, I'd leave him alone, if only he wasn't such a great target." His only contribution to the thread was to bait. Unfortunately (for the forum) Im only too happy to respond as Im very used to dealing with people like Lloyd day to day. I dont mind taking people down a peg or two, nor do I mind when people think I need the same. Now if poor Lloyd is upset by a few home truths being pointed out to him then perhaps he needs to pull his head in and provide helpfull info rather than just shit stir. It seems thats all he's good for lately. In fact every row on the forum seems to of been instigated on a large part by him. A fact I know the mods have made him aware of time and time again. I certianly know that if Lloyd was banned from this forum there sure would be a lot less arguments running back and forth. Same can be said for me too I guess but then Lloyd would just find someone else to pick on before long.Anway, apologies again.
