    Hi All,

As some of you may remember i blew a head gasket about a month ago....After getting no less then 7 quotes on the work being done and with the best being $2800.00 not including new head or mechining......

I decided i would hit up by brother inlaw for some assistance with completeing this mission...I rolled into the shed at 10am this morning and after much grunting growning and swaring we got to the point where we only have 2 bolts standing in our way of getting to the head bolts....

Nest to the lower cam cover is a aluminium pipe that seems to be in our way but we cant find where to take it off so as we can get to the head bolts...

Does anyone know how to get this thing out of our way????

I also need to replace every (rubber & plastic) pipe in the car and some of the aluminium ones....as well as 50% of the clips and one coil pack....

Does anyone know where i can get all this and the gaskets from where they will not charge an arm and a leg????

**Note: I do already have the Plenum Gasket....

All the help would be greatly appreciated as i really miss driving my car.... I have even attached a picture for you all to see of what is usually looks like....

When i figure out how to add a picture.......

You have to upload the pics to the net first, a site like www.photodump.org . Are you swapping the head gaskets with the engine in the car? why not just pull the engine?

    Thanks for the file help....

We are doing it in the car as the engine hoist has a 187 Holden Inline Six out of a HD on it...

Her is the picture of the Beast....

i went to nissan and got a regrind kit basically all gaskets including head gasket up .& pcv valves hoses etc. Luckily only paid trade but still cost a fortune . Would be great if anyone knows of a cheap source for hoses , pipes and the likes. Good luck with pulling the heads dude.

THe Car is a trwin turbo and the pipe in question is on both sides running around to teh back of the heads somewhere Once we have this off we can pull the heads....

Does anyone know where i can get a cheap harmonic balanacer?

I found that a large majority of the parts for the rebuild can be bought from super cheap auto.

Thank you again for the help guys.

What sort of harmonic balancer do you want? Has your stock unit failed?

The pipe you speak of sounds like the EGR inlet to the plenum, it runs around to a large round solenoid at the centre rear of the engine. This should not be the cause of why the heads won't come off since you should already have the cam covers removed.

As previously mentioned, please post a picture of what you are having trouble with. If you can post a pic of the car you can post a pic of the problem.

are you doing the under plenum coolant hoses bypass? you also might want to think about deleting your EGR.

    Thanks to all

I have Sucsedully removed the EGR pipe (That is what it was) i have not figured out how to remove the outer cam covers, or the lower plenum...

I have now removed all but the heads and headers, it seems i heed to remove the turbos to do so as some of the bolts are in a awkward spot.

The factory harmonic balancer is still usable but only maybe 20k as such will be replaced with an underdrive pully and the water pump for which is also stuffed will be replaced with a over drive one....

I have ordered most parts, but the 2 i seem to be having the most trouble with is the Cluch Fan (Blades) and the Cover to go over the plenum....

I will be looking at doing a by pass of under plenum hoses but i am not sure as to what ones can be left off.....

Once again for everybodys help with this on going sarga....

How do you know the harmonic balancer is only good for another 20K? Those things are bloody strong units and instances of them failing have not been recorded or seen. Unless you want to upgrade to a UDP then it should still be good.

I take my hat off to you removing the heads with the engine in situ. The outer cam covers are easy to remove, I only took mine off last week. The drivers side is just a series of bolts holding it down with the tricky one being in between the upper plenum support bracket. The passenger side requires the hose that joins the PCV system removed which is on the rear side. Just ensure all the bolts are out and pry them off with a flat screwdriver.

The Harmonic balance has quite a large number of cracks in the back of it and is some what brittle...and to have it reconditioned is $200.00 and a underdrive pully is half that...

We where assesing whether to leavit in the engine bay or to remove it...the problem is we donot have anywhere to put is as the engine stand has another engine on it.

We plan to finish some time before 2010 but it is not looking good..
