hey zedders over the last 3 months my zed battery is slowly getting run down.

I got a centrys battery tester and found the following results..

    Alternator suspect..

    Charge volts 12.78
    Charge amps -9.5a
    ripple volts 83.1 mV

    Battery: Dieing
    initial volts 12.05v
    S loaded volts 8.7V
    OHms 10.9mOhm
    clamp drop .0v
    Accum Charge -0.12Ah

Ive noticed over the last 3 months that if the car sits for more than 3 days i loose charge.

Should I get my alternator replaced ? What have people paid?

Is it better to get a 2nd hand alternator and rebuild the brushes and Regulator?

Is there an interchangable alternator from another nissan that i can get new for half the 300zx price? (just checking, it could be from a pajero / blue bird)

    Many Thanks

    Frank

Don't know if your alt is dying, but a new one is about $450. Apparently they aren't worth getting rebuilt. So the sparky said anyway...

I am having this EXACT problem atm, hada massive drive on the GOR did near enough to 10 hours of driving on the day and for whatever reasons I didnt need to drive the car for the next week or so, so then went to start and it wouldnt...Battery is about 6 months old, and when I jump start its fine, so Im assuming its also an alternator :(

I dont have a battery tester, but I did just buy a Greddy Infometer and it gives you voltage readouts via the ECU and its been dipping below 13V a lot, where I see Dougs new guages show it needs to be around 14V?

Anyway, I'll be doing some checking around in the next few days, so if i find anything that isnt already posted here Ill let you know :)

    Cheers, Andrew

Gady, im an auto elec by trade(apprentice), i rebuild alternators nearly everyday, new regulator, brushes and bearings, maybie a new set of slip rings if needed and you've got a new alt, probly a hundred bucks worth of parts if that, i think from memory we do reco or change overs for about $220 i think. New can be $350 up. I havnt done a z alt but from memory its a bosch unit and should be a piece of cake to do.
Actually it could be a mitsubishi, a little more playing around but doable either way.
Oh and yes its your alternator, its dead if your charging current is 12 volt should be in the 13's or 14s;)

umm, could prove interesing without bearing splitters or presses to put the new bearings on but meh, i really need an alt to split open to get part numbers. Also bout 200,00 kays is usually when they'll start to die.
Any one want to sell they're old dead one for next to nothing for research purposes lol?

Haha yeah, im nearly 205,000km....I found that UniqueAutosports is selling them new for $395....As Im in Melb I might see how much TTzed can do them for especially as I can pick them up from him...If overall price is the same I dont think there would be much difference in postage price from either as its still interstate for you....ill call in the morning just to give you another option if you decide against a rebuild...

yep sounds good so long as postage isnt too crazy lol,pm me anyway guys they're a bit weighty.
And also im pretty sure they'res a different type on n/a's. Once i get one i might get some bulk parts ordered in so i can do a few, i would use mine as a donor but its perfect already so i dont wanna touch it:rolleyes:

If you have a fair few aftermarket electrical items installed, I'd test each of the feeds to see what their power draws are when the car is switched off. You'd be amazed that even a small current pull can manage over a few days.

Thats a good thing to check for :) But I know I havent added anything to my car for months, so I doubt all of a sudden it would be a problem. I jump started my car and took it for a good 2 hour drive, was fine the next day even with a freezing morning, but then that night I went to go to a mates place and it was dead....

The initial symptoms were the accessory lights would go on, but it seemed like the battery didnt have enough charge in it to get the engine to fully turn over...now even my remote locking wont even work, nor will any lights come on...

considering it will start fine after a good drive, but within a day or so loses its charge id say it seems more like an alternator issue...the battery is only a few months old, so I doubt it would need a top up of water as I've only done like 2k-3k km on it....im happy to hear otherwise, as a battery is cheaper than a new alternator...but it seems more like the alternator isnt help the battery recharge when in use...

Have you tried another battery? I know yours is only a few months old, but it could still be defective. Also check the battery terminals, battery clamps and also any wires related to the alternator. Might be getting a poor charge due to a bad connection.

Also are the 300zx alternators internally regulated?

Frank, can you try the battery tester when cranking the car over? It requires a large amount of power to get the car to crank over, and if the battery is going out, it won't be able to hold powerful enough charge to allow proper cranking, even if the volts show up as normal.

I'm no electrical pro, but thats my understanding of it anyway.

the alternators past 2005 have been quoted a life span of 15 years... if ur zed is over 12 years - just buy a new one - its gonna cost a lil more but it would b worth it...
just think about it.. if u buy a new one it would last longer without replacement or repares - if its faulty u can return it and get a new one...

    any interest in

Hey zedders any interest in a NEW OEM alternator group buy?

With what it costs to rebuild an alt we may as well investigate an OEM group buy and perhaps get them from Courtisy Niassan or similar USA dealer. If we are in luck we might add a box of alternators into another Container or parcel.

SO if interested plz state your NAMES! :rolleyes2:

    Cheers
