The z1 shafts are about $300 + shipping (which is only $100-$200)

    massive noob question here...

what is the tailshaft exactly? and what would getting a new one do for me?

The driveshaft is the long rotating cylindrical object that transfers power from your gearbox to your diff. Getting a one piece driveshaft gives you weight savings on rotational mass. I'd get a steel driveshaft though

Also, in addition to ichizora's point, it eliminates the 'centre bearing' in the tailshaft. The tailshaft is made up of two long rotating cylindrical objects connected by this 'centre bearing' and it is prone to failure to varying degrees.

would getting a 1 peice remove vibrations also?

I've got one on the zed (Z1 steel 1-piece). Noticeable difference for me but I installed a lightweight flywheel as well. My vibrations went away too but that would be due to the new Nismo gearbox mount I installed. If anything it introduced a vibration at low RPMs under load.

Installed a Z1 one piece steel unit in an N/A, it eliminated vibration & the sensation the rear end was going to fall out of the car on take off, however the original two piece unit it replaced had very bad universals.
I have just installed one in a TT as test item in an attempt to eliminate vibration, so I would have to say they are OK.
As far a an aluminum one, I was considering getting one of these but they recommend a tailshaft loop be used in case of failure.
Another more expensive option is the carbon fibre units, now they save weight.

I got mine off eBay over a year ago. A 1 Piece Aluminium Shaft from DriveMasters or ShaftMasters or something like that. Paid around $380 from memory including delivery. Have no regretted it.

Which would be better, aluminium or steel driveshaft? If so why? Thanks.

Might as well ask SMIC or FMIC lol. I don't think its a clear cut choice. Everyone is going to give you a pro and con for either.

I personally went with the Aluminium 1 Piece because A. It's a 1 Piece, meaning no center bearing and B, Its much lighter then steel which mostly appealed to me because I didn't want to go with a Lightened Flywheel but I did want to lighten any rotating mass.

So yea, I went Aluminum Driveshaft and AMS Lightened pulley set but left the stock Flywheel in there for a compromise between being nimble and comfortable for daily driving.

Google steel vs aluminium driveshaft, old debate about their pros and cons. Chose steel mainly for safety reasons since I'll be introducing quite a bit of torque with mine

Please relate your experience with exploding carbon fibre driveshafts.
