to remove the head bolts you need a 10mm size. about 100mm long makes it easy too

Yep, I have short stumpy ones in sockets and I have to remove the cams to get to the head bolts :( PITA!

10mm. Get a impact wrench. Get a 1/2 inch 10mm hex drive with extension and 100 psi and walla.

was just doing this today. And have some additional questions for the head removing gurus.

    1. so i can get sockets that remove allen key fittings? Excellent, was about to start a thread asking what tool to use.

    2. Are there ten bolts each side? Theres two visible once lower plenums removed, three when the inner cam covers removed, down next to them. Theres two more on the side of the heads above the engine mounts. Wheres the rest? Down next to the other cam set? So all bolts are on top or on side, none on front and back, correct?

    3. Are na and tt heads the same? also cams and cam gears?

Umm, I think what you're describing are the oil gallery plugs, not the head bolts. You'll see the head bolts when you remove both the intake and exhaust cam covers. They're visible underneath the cams, but can be removed without pulling the cams themselves.

A picture would help describe it more accurately, but it's dark in my garage at the moment.

    Depends...

NA and TT heads are different.

Auto TT cams are different to all others.

    Cam gears are the same.

    Edit:

But they can be interchanged without too many issues.

All the head bolts are under the cam covers, 8 on each head. Plus 2 small 6mm bolts at the front of the passenger side head, and rear of the driver side head externally. The ones you are talikng about are coolant gallery plugs and are actually torx head.

Also try to avoid using long allen sockets when tensioning reasonably high torques like head bolts. The long shank will twist and reduce the tension that is actually applied to the bolt. I use a normal short 10mm Snap-on allen socket with the 1/2" drive end machined down to fit between to cam thrust and cylinder head casting at number one cylinder. And avoid using a rattle gun on allen bolts, they can strip relatively easily.
