Afternoon All, I've got some chatter out of my aiv solenoid, and the suggestion was made to just disconnect the plug for this as its not needed, but on our local NZ forum it was suggested that if I do this the car will have idle issues.
Car presently is hunting between 750 - 1500 rpm at idle, and the chatter continues.

Can someone who has removed the aiv system, tell me what exactly happens?

    cheers

I had removed mine ages ago and it did not affect my idle.

    Re: nothing

What does the AIV actually do? If you can remove it and nothing bad happens, why is it there in the first place ?

Adds air into the exhaust system in front of the cats

Think this allows unburned fuel to burn off as it hits the cats. Not sure if this helps at all in extending the life of the cats but probably has more to do with vehicle emission controls and what comes out the end of the exhaust pipes

    Ahh sounds right

its becoming apparent that anything that can be removed without any negative side effects is generally Emissions related.

    Cheers - seen that one

Read this one up, but my problem lies with the solenoid that is left functioning in that Tech article..... just stops short of explaining what I needed to know :(

    nothing, but it gets embarassing....

Hi APM, a word of advice.

My aiv solenoids have chattered from time to time, and I've always subsequently found that there is a corrosion issue with an engine bay connector - the most common ones being the temp sensor connectors, and sometimes with the car in safety boost as well. Clean the connector, and the solenoid stops chattering. By the way, I've removed the aivs and blocked the vacuum lines, but left the solenoid connected, so it all still looks stock.

I'd suggest leaving the aiv solenoid intact (even if you remove the actual aivs themselves), and go looking for a connector corrosion problem, which will be the likely cause of the aiv solenoids chattering.

    Good luck!:zlove:
