Coming back from Airlie Beach last night and 6 km away from home in Brisbane when there was a horrible noise and smoke from under the bonnet, along with a drop of power. Pulled over, lifted the bonnet and found the noise and smoke coming from the clutch of the aircon compressor. Turned off the aircon, which stopped noise and smoke, and was able to motor home without any problem. Since the aircon compressor had been a bit noisier than normal over the last 12 mths, I'm assuming that something has seized in the aircon compressor. My car is a 1990 Z32TT manual, so I presume it is is still on R12 gas.

Would appreciate help with following questions:
    Has anyone experienced similar problem?
How much $ is a new aircon compressor?
Anyone have a 2nd hand aircon compressor for sale in good condition? How much $?
Are there any aircon compressors from other cars or other nissan models that are the same as the 300Zx compressor?
Anyone in Brisbane had aircon repairs done? Any good aircon specialists in Brisbane (prefer near city or northside)?

    Thanks

    Mine died recently.

I had the system converted to the new gas and my compressor rebuilt. All up it was about 500 bucks.

    Mine wasnt rebuilt nathan....

it just came off a spare engine that my mechanic had, so for all I know it could die tommorow. But at the time I didnt have much cash so I just gambled on the 2nd hand one. Touch would it has served me well for 1.5 years without trouble or noise.

    Cheers
